Purple tang help

I just got a purple tang yesterday from my local pet store. I have him in qt tank. How long will it take for him to start eating. He is swimming around all over the tank but not in a panic mode. I have red and green seaweed on a clip for him but its untouched

Leave the lights off and let her chill and get comfy...keep feeding small amounts of different foods to see what she likes...I leave white lights off for 2-3 when adding a new fish...

You ask a question that can't be answered.

But...in general terms I wouldn't fret over a couple days. You have a solid plan for the quarantine, dealing with ammonia and such?

I usually provide some shelter/hiding locations using large PVC.

I got him or her at the pet store when she was still in the bag because I got an extra twenty percent off. I got to pick out of four of them and this one plus one other looked the best from what I could see at the time. I have seen the other one's since they released them in to there tanks. This one and the one they put in there main DT looked the best.
Thanks for the help I guess I will try and feed some mysis shrimp tomorrow.

Try just adding a drop or two of garlic to the water to entice the tang, I know that not everyone agrees with garlic but if push comes to shove that maybe a option for you. Try mysis, pellets, flake, anything and everything to give the tang some choices. Make sure you leave the lights off or low for the first couple of days to help with acclimating.

Well I got some good news I put some more seaweed in and he is finally eating it looks like he likes the green stuff more. I also put DT water in the QT. I have no high reading in my DT they are all at 0. I do water changes once a week in both tanks. I take water out of Qt then out of DT put that water in Qt and put new water in DT. If any body thinks that is wrong hit me up with a message. So I can learn and do things different or try new ways. Thanks for all the good advice

Or Selcon. I wouldnt keep a tang without selcon

Yes absolutely selcon, vitachem, Zoe... All of it, just in moderation. Formula 1,2,spirilina flakes, spectrum pellets try it all.

Taking water from the DT and putting in the QT isn't a problem providing that the DT is disease free. If the tang gets ich in the QT then your DT has it and you are always going to fight a uphill battle. Treat with prazipro for worms too. Start the prazipro first

My DT doesn't have anything in it that hasn't went through QT. I'm already treating with prazipro and Copper. I have a copper test kit but the bottle says I need to be at 2.5 ppm. It recommends that you us 1 oz per 20 g, I tested after I put it in a few hours later and the test doesn't even show me being close to what they recommend.

The copper test shows me at about 1.0 to 1.5 ppm

What kind of copper are you using? I would leave the copper level lower then what is suggested and leave the tang in it longer. The higher the copper in the QT the less likely the tang will be to eat, that's why I suggested the prazipro treatment first that way you can get the PT eating well

Copper level is too high for zebrasoma species IMO... Assuming the reason is correct... It's only been a day or two? Relax, your tang will be fine... I'd be more worried about it getting enough oxygen as well at this point, being in a QT...

You might go to the fish disease forum and check on treating with two things at once. There are warnings regarding mixing copper treatments with other things. I don't remember for sure but I think Prazi was amongst those warnings of things not to mix when treating copper.

If you are using cupramine you are fine to use it with prazipro. Relax a little and don't get in a hurry with quarantine... I usually don't mix the treatments unless there's a very good reason too. Keep an airstone in the tank somewhere... Dissolved oxygen is low when treating so it is wise to supplement.

It sounds like your fish is eating now, but I will throw this out there anyway. It has taken a full day or two to get almost every tang I own to discover the seaweed clip, sometimes longer. It isn't exactly how they graze in the ocean so keep that in mind when training them onto a clip. +1 on the selcon. I will soak mysis and the rest of my homemade blend in that and zoe every few days, especially if the fish needs to put weight on. Good luck with your tang!

+1 if he is using cupramine, also if you use cupramine make sure you use only RO water with it and not water that has been treated with a water conditioner since that will make the cupramine much more toxic

+1, it is also important that you don't add any of your own conditioners and ammonia reducers (prime) while treating.
