Purple Tang Shortage?

For what its worth...

PEA - Pacific East Aquaculture
PIA - Pacific Island Aquatics

Just for reference. I just got kinda confused myself. :)

Aloha!

I was literally about to post this exact topic, but before I hit the new thread button I looked down and saw your post. I get daily e-mail updates when Liveaquaria updates their divers den, and I just searched my emails for "Purple Tang" The last time liveaquaria got one in was two weeks ago. Before then, they hadn't got one in a month or so.

I noticed you were able to get one from some other source. How is he doing? Do you recommend your seller?

I am in no rush at the moment as I have my new Blue Jaw Triggerfish on the way, but Purple Tang will be next. Thanks.

Ended up going with PIA for my Black Tang and a Chevron too :)

Couldn't wait on the wholesaler any longer since my Purple is already sitting in QT.

Guys should be here tomorrow :)

Here's the Black I bought:

Purple Tang is doing just fine :)

They had a Purple Tang on Live Aquaria recently. Actually saw it pop up before the email went out.

Even thought I was desperate for a Purple, I wasn't going to spend $229 on a 2" Purple Tang... I let it go to somebody else :headwallblue:

Awesome! I noticed he wasn't there anymore, glad you got him :)

Can't wait, Kevin was a life saver! Was getting into a bind with already having my existing Yellow and now the Purple in QT. Couldn't keep waiting on a Black to show up.

Also will be like this in the new tank:
- 2 1/2" Purple
- 3 1/2" Yellow
- 4" Black

Probably the best size to aggression ratio I could hope for.

And you will be surprised at how fast they grow too. The black will grow larger than the other two, but the yellow and purple will probably end up being relatively similar in size. Mine have slowed down at 6" but I think they are still growing.

Guess I'm done with Tangs for a while...

Will have the following in the tank:
Black, Purple, Yellow, Yellow Bellied Blue, Chevron and Tomini.

Should add Achilles and maybe Achilles Hybrid towards the end. Not sure what else Tang wise would be good... Had to convince myself endless times not to get a Sohal :(

I have the following tangs in my 520:

Achilles
Powder blue
Powder blue hybrid
Black
Yellow x3 (4 more finishing up in qt)
Purple x2
Blonde naso
Fowleri
Lieutenant
Orange shoulder
Kole

Lots of tangs.. But they get along fine. I really love the lieutenant, mine is about 9" and is growing some serious streamers, very underrated fish IMO. I would like to add a black hybrid at some point as well, been eyeing the one on PIA but my qts are full.

I had a sohal when I set the tank up. He shared a 90 qt with a powder blue and a purple tang and was very well behaved, they all got along great. When it came time to go into the display it was another story. It sounds silly, but IMHO a 500 isn't big enough for a sohal. Even with fewer tangs I don't think he would have been happy in that amount of space.

How do the other Acan. Tangs get along? Where they all added at once?

Too bad about the Sohal, beautiful fish! When we visit Vegas I always stop by the round tank in the Forum Shops, lots of nice big fat Sohals in there...

Most were added at the same time, and they get along fine. There is some sparring, which is to be expected, but no chasing and nothing resulting in injury.

well since I used this thread to source my purple tang from NYA.. and it came in looking like this.. died within 2 weeks.. my quest will continue. Anywhere else I can get one that actually cares about their livestock?

I ordered a small specimen from petco that arrived last Saturday as I always heard they come direct from Quality Marine. I'm happy with the size. Been QTing it in rubbermaids on the floor so don't have any good pictures but hasn't exhibited any ich symptoms and eats brine and mysis.

I'm happy with how everything turned out. I would order again though it came in a very small box (CA to Chicago) so I was slightly concerned when it arrived.

Our Purple Tang from NYA also passed away. It didn't look anything like yours, but was always very skittish. After quarantine it didn't last very long in the DT and found it dead on the powerhead. I think it was more a stress issue.

Liveaquaria always has great stuff, no problems there.

I placed an order with Coral Imports yesterday, got 5 small female Lyretail Anthias, a large Lineatus Wrasse and large Common Cleaner Wrasse. All showed up nice and healthy this morning, packaged well too.

Looks like their Purple Tangs are out of stock though :(

I stand corrected.

Not that important honestly, but QM does hold onto fish longer than TFI... The multibar angels my buddy got from them 2 months ago had been there since April provided via the SSC tag that accompanied the fish. Everyone just assumes if it comes from California, it's coming from QM

The part about "coming from California" is probably why I assumed QM. Good to hear about the multibars. Can you elaborate on what the "SSC tag" is? Always interested to learn a little more about the wholesale side of our hobby.

"SSC" stands for short supply chain, which can mean either the fish was caught and shipped out to QM directly or I believe but don't quote me means it only hits one "middle man" if you will. For the record I don't own a LFS but have access to QM lists and prices (+15-20%) for a landed fish. Depending on what your looking to get, QM doesn't always have the best prices but ALWAYS has the best selection
