Pylons Tank!

So, the last couple days one of the heads in my hammerhead has been receeded.. I could still see the polyps so I thought it was no big deal, but I got home today and the lights came on and that head is totaly gone? I mean I don't see anything in there.. totaly weird.. I tried to take pics but my camera isn't working. I'll have to get the parents camera and do that.. i'll also test tonight and start making some water just incase..

nice tank! love the rocks. Im wishing i got the fiji like you instead of the key largo from marcorocks! That nem really looks bleached beyond repair I hope it makes it for you. I run my tanks at 82 year round. They get down to 80F-82F but mostly stay at 82. I would be worried if they get beyond that to much though.

Sorry to hear about the hammerhead. Some "experts" say that hammerheads are very sensitive to water parameters. Lost mine due to a low but stil considered normal pH. Dropped from 8.4 to 7.8 before I realized it.

Great thread, BTW!

So I had been going back over what I have done before this had started happening.
I used a new type of water for to top off the tank and I think that might have done it.. I'm not sure.. Normally I buy the walmart distilled water. I've been using that since the start of this tank.. this time walmart was out and I had no other choice then buy some other type of distilled water... but this kind I dont know where it comes from of it it is made with copper tubing? I'm not sure... so I think that may be the problem.. which is the water..
Hopefully walmart will have some distilled water in tomorrow and i'll start making some new water for a water change..
I didn't use that much of the new water to top off the tank.. maybe 4-6 cups?

Also, something that I had started doing.. I started to dose iodine. about three drops a day..
I directions say 8 drops a day for a 50 gallon tank.. mine is 28.. I took some extra way cause I have a very deep sand bed.. so I dose about three drops a day..

ALSO.. the directions on the iodine says to shake the bottle for adding some.. I failed to do that.. maybe that could cause the problem.
Other then my zoa frag that had the red hair on it I have no issues with my other corals, live stock seems to be happy. it's just the Frogspawn and the Hammer it's happening too..
Alas.. some pictures..
Sorry, they are a little blurry

Zoas seem to be doing fine..

(Lights just turned on when I took this pic. they were still opening up)

I hope I hope I hope that the person who can test my water is doing better tonight so I can get some results.. being color blind I really can't tell the difference between some of the levels so I need someone else to look for me!

I"ll keep you up to date.. I hope everything pulls though..
a RO/DI unit is going to be my next investment.. just waiting for the check to come in.

PS.. that nem does look bleeched, he's been doing fine though.. I feed him about twice a week (Wednesdays and Saterdays) He'll react quickly to the food but normally eats it once a week.. sometimes I may give him to much though :)

Thanks! I TOTALLY love my macrorocks. I would buy from there again anytime and everytime I set up a new tank. I can't say enough about them.
It's getting to be about that time of the year where if I leave my windows open I wont worry about any heating issues.. Up in the mountains where I am today high is gonna be 77 :) Unless we get a major heatwave it probly wont get much higher then that until next summer.

Good job!!
Following ur thread

Thanks! :) I don't think I would have made it this far with out help from DJ and other reef central members.

yeah, I really gotta stay on top of my testing..now that I have a set schedule (for the most part) I should be able to start testing again regularly.

Update: My Frogspawn is coming out a bit more.. I don't know what caused him to deflate so much like that.. it's weird to see him that far down and really had me worried because of the hammer..
I"ll be keeping a watchful eye on 'em.

forgot to test for ammonia...

So, my goal for tomorrow is to buy water and get that going.. it looks like this new water may not be good.. any other suggestions?

Any problems you may be having with your hammer or torch corals may be do to the anemone touching and stinging them. Has the anemone been moving around alot?It can possibly kill your corals if it gets on the move so i would be careful. I wouldnt dose the iodine unless your testing for it though i doubt that 3 drops would really have that much of an effect on your tank. I wouldnt dose anything that your not testing for for that matter. The water changes you do will most likely be enough to replace used up trace elements for now id just stick to a good water change schedule until you see a real problem. Tests look good to me, I like to run chemipure elite and/ or activated carbon/Phosban in my fuge it just makes for clearer water, removes most smells, lets light penetrate better, and IMO makes for a healthier tank some people use nothing but ive had great success with it. I like the phosphate removing media like phosban as long as you change it out atleast once a month. But imo everything is looking good just keep an eye on the nem as you know it looks bleached and be careful its not stinging your other corals. Another good thing about running the activated carbon is that it will remove an chemicals that the corals release in a "chemical warfare" as to keep your tank alittle safer :) . Good luck though

Nem has been fine, he moved when he was first introduced to the tank, then about two weeks after that he moved again, but for since he he hasn't moved at all. I know he looks bleached but he acts healthy.
I have a test kit for the iodine but the instructions are very vague and it is a poor test kit in general.
I have activated carbon in the media filter as long as a filter sponge and ceramic rings.. this is the first time Phos has ever showed up.. actually this is the first time anything has been above 0. I think the new water had something to do with the high phos. I do need to change out my carbon, it's probably been a month.

OK, go to the store (Krogers, Safeway, Walmart etc) and invest in one of those 5 gallon water bottles and fill it up using the water treatment station. You'll pay like $.35 per gallon that way. It makes it much easier/more economical to transport water in quantity. Make sure the water you get is RO. Use this water for water changes. I'd do 10 gal per week (maybe more often) until everything straightens out.

Sound likes a plan, I know what you're talking about with the water treatment stations, they used to be all over the place where I grew up in Fla, but I don't know if there are any up here. I'll start looking around for one,.

I personally use the Glacier stations in Krogers (I have 2 of them on the way home from my office, and one literally right up the street from me), so I'd say check grocery stores first, then maybe Walmart next.

Will do, I'll start lookign asap. Everythign in the tank looks great today! the one head of Hammer is out and extended nicely. the FRog is out and looking nice! I guess it's just the levels I gotta take care of. thanks for the help as always DJ!

I just was looking at ym corals again and I noced something growing my my rocks. I'm not sure what it is and I can't tell the color.. I"ll get the camera tomorrow and post up some pictures.. I don't think it looks good. it doesn't look like Coraline :(/

So. Wal_mart has a Cullagan (sp) water machine that according to the brochure has RO water..The nozzle on it though is metal, I don't know if it's stanless stell or something else.. I couldn't really see if there was any copper plumbing on the inside.. any insight on this? The 3 gallon jar for this thing was 7 bucks, the 5 gallon didn't have a price on it.. but I got the same distilled water i've been using since the start and mixing some up now.

No copper. It's too expensive. I'm sure it's all PVC plumbing or some equivalent plastic. The metal, I'm sure is either aluminum or stainless. Either way it's fine. That's hella expensive - I pay $.29/gal for mine.

Oh edit: You're talking about the containers - OK I get it.

I like your thread and how patient you have been.

In the last few pictures your nem looks to be white almost. It was green. I think you may want to check that forum for opinions but by what I have read it is going downhill.

I dont have one so I do not know the answer to fix it but I do not want to see you loose another.

Thanks for the concern :) He's pretty much been like that since day one. The only time I remember seeing any green in him is when he was in the bucket acclimating.
It's weird I know :)
