Question about online fish/coral buying

I remember when I first started out I felt the same way about trs. to be honest as I look back I think its all perception. tom and his crew are great once you get to know them and very knowledgeable.

I'm really envious of you Rochester guys that you've had great LFSs for so long. When I started over here in Syracuse, there was pretty much nothing. I literally got laughed at in the LFSs we did have for asking about things like protein skimmers or calcium dosing. The first time I visited TRS I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

When I first started I had went to few places that would sell me anything and everything without any care in the world about whether my system was cycled. Whether I was dosing or testing perameters. I spent a lot of money to watch stuff slowly disappear. I almost got out because of the cost. When I did find a place that "cared" about what was going on in my tank, I spent alot less and it became fun. JMO...Make sure you don't misunderstand a LFS that "cares" about what your doing in your tank. That place will soon become your "best friend".

I love all of our LFS, and visit them often. I go to rochester and buffalo. but i can understand saving double to triple the cost on corals by ordering online. Fish i am a little weary about ordering online, i like to see them in person and watch them eat and all that fun stuff!!!
I never have quarantined a new fish (i know its not good practice, knock on wood) but if i ordered online i feel like i would absolutely have to with the stress from shipping.

The majority of what I buy is from the LFS (ABC reefs and ABC reefs 2) or at frag swaps from fellow reefers. However, when I do buy online, I usually buy from liveaquaria, and recently put in an order with pacificeastaquaculture. I've also bought from bluezooaquatics.

Liveaquaria is great. I've only had two corals that didn't make it, and one they actually didn't even send, but sent me a note along with the rest of my order, saying that the coral started to look bad, so they didn't want to send it, and had already refunded my money. It put my order below their free shipping amount, but didn't charge me for shipping. In the other case, the coral started to die the day after it was put in my tank, so I called liveaquaria. They told me to keep them updated. When it died two days later, I gave them a call, and they refunded me my money without even asking for pictures. I do recommend buying corals and fish from them from their Diver's den, because they are quarantined better, and the sizes of the corals are bigger than if you'd just order out of the regular sections.

I haven't had any problems with bluezooaquatics. They do send an acclimating kit along with any order, which is really nice.

I most recently made a purchase from pacificeastaquaculture. My order got here REALLY early in the morning, which was awesome. Everything was packaged really well, and the corals have been doing great so far in my tank. They actually called me later on in the day to see if I received my shipment, and to see if I was satisfied so far with my purchases and the packaging. They then told me to give them a call if I had any issues at all, and thanked me again for my order. I thought that was pretty cool.

As others have said, I'd try first to get corals or fish from one of the local fish stores. I'd definitely recommend that with fish. But if you decide to order online, those three places, in my experience at least, are decent places to order from.

I am a big ARC fan since its a 5 min drive, but Saltwater paradise, and pets plus deserve a bump.

I know pets plus in lockport had its problems, and a lot of people prob don't go for that reason. I took a drive out yesterday and they had tons of saltwater stuff, prices are best ive seen in the area. lots of really nice stuff.

arc has a huge selection sps,lps
Don't get me wrong arc is awsome not trying to bash them at all. i just dont understand how they can label a group of asst. torches and frogs for 200$ and you go other places and see them for 45$. I get a ton of great stuff from them just some of the prices are a little higher. I shop arc more than any other. So arc guys don't hate.

saltwater paradise great people great prices. just may not always have the most rare corals. still plenty to choose from.

its fine to leave a place a know you got what you paid for, but its always nice to leave feeling like you got something more. Some places provide that more often for me than others.

I agree with shopping locally. Sometimes you can get really good deals from someone breaking down a tank, or just re-doing it.

Every fish store has its pluses and minuses. Some have better fish selections, some have better coral selection, some have better customer service. That's the way it is with every store, in every niche.

I've ordered online, but only twice from liveaquaria. I was happy with my order both times. I've shopped at World Wide Corals in Orlando in person (with a friend) and had them ship my order back on the plane. It went well, and we got in store pricing even though they shipped the corals. They were great, and I wouldn't hesitate ordering from them again.

Dont know where you are but Ive hd great luck with the guys at The Salty dog. Aam and Kyle are great with the inexperienced, they'll special order anything, they're not presumptuous or pushy, and they've helped me through some major issues just by talking and understanding that we are hobbyists- not pros. Otherwisw we'd own the stores.
thanks guys- big bump

Have you been to any of the frag swaps that have happened recently? There's a pretty insane variety of stuff available right out of others' tanks. I don't exactly follow the latest fad corals but there are always tanks stuffed with them at frag trades.

My preference for corals is:

1) Local hobbyist friends
2) Regional hobbyists at frag trades
3) LFSs
4) Online

+1 . I like to get corals and fish I can watch a little while or that are grown in a hobbyist's tank.
For on line relaiability it's hard to beat Live Aquaria, Foster and Smiths.

Thank you all so much and i do agree with always trying to go locally first I also have my craigslist notifier set to go off anytime it sees anything saltwater/coral related in the tag lol always looking for a good deal on tank breakdowns lol. But all this info and feed back is great BUMP TO EVERYONE FOR THE HELP.
