how big is it?? like exact measurement...

GREAT QUESTION... because Melev and I looked everywhere we could think of to find this answer prior to me purchasing it and couldn't find measurements. Obviously I am space limited with my setup.

The entire thing put together is 4.5" in diameter and just over 4" tall. It's a pretty good use of space considering it can be used on systems 50-900 gallons.

Evan,

I love my Magnavore but have it submerged in my sump, any reason why do don't have it submerged?

The measuring thing led me to this: I figured I would share a bit of wisdom I picked up on after a bunch of years in the hobby. I always need a to measure stuff in my tank like that reactor after its running and don't want to remove it just to measure it. Metal tape measures and salt water are obviously are a no no.

So the way I measure things under water like coral growth etc. is I got an all plastic tape measure. Even the end that is usually metal is plastic on these things. I looked around for a link for you guys but found that the "pill tape measures" like I have are normally sold for promotional purposes in packs of minimum 150.

Anyways I don't think any reef keeper should be without an all plastic tape measure to measure stuff underwater. Here's a picture of mine that I got free from Washington Mutual at some trade show for business. The only metal on it is the key chain part (stainless anyways) and perhaps the spring inside that I just keep out of the water.

thats a cool little reactor. when i first saw it i thought it was some sort of DIY project involving a shower drain. :)

It can even be partially exposed or fully submerged and work equally well.

^ :D Nope, you are good to go my man.

So after waiting all day for the second package I called DHL.. It's delayed a day. UGH... Guess I'll spill the beans. The package is a box of frags from Paul Whitby's tank that won Tank of the Month on Reefkeeping Online in October 2007 .

For those of you that don't know, Paul's tank began leaking and had to be completely taken down for the time being. It's truly a tragedy. He hasn't decided whether or not to replace it and start over but for now he got rid of all his corals. Full story here:
Paul Whitby's Tragic Loss

I wanted to cry thinking that these corals which have now grown up to 3 feet x 2 feet might just die  So I got a bunch of frags shipped to me from Oklahoma.

Long story short DHL told me it would be another day and now I'm very worried that they might die as they are somewhere in Dallas in a truck for the night and it is very cold out tonight (he did put a heat pack in there so cross your fingers).

So I emailed Paul and he said that some people had found red bugs on the frags. Time for QT tank and Interceptor.

So I made a run to the store for a QT tank while I had saltwater mixing. I'll post about my QT setup tomorrow when everything arrives. On the way back I stopped by the LFS to get the baby hippo tang to help me with the caulerpa issue. The only hippo was perfect (>1") minus the fact that they called it a yellow belly (which it had no yellow belly yet) and wanted 90 dollars for it :(

So needless to say I couldn't go home empty handed and WOOT!! Enter baby copper-band butterfly!! He was still in the bag and had just been delivered. He's about an inch long and sooo cute. I never allow myself to name them until they have lived two weeks in my tank.

I used the outlet from my papone reactor to drip water into his bag for acclimation (such a versatile DIY project).

After acclimation he just looked around for a bit. My clown looked like a wrasse swimming in and out of the rockwork inspecting this new alien lifeform. He's the least timid copper-band I have seen and was out and about swimming with the clown within minutes.

Then he started nipping at the rock! YAY, he eats! Don't know if he was finding pods or what, but he just kept hunting on the rocks. Then he grabbed an aiptasia right in front of me! I just about screamed that this might be it for my aiptasia issue (until I thought about scaring him).

Where the heck am I?

Cool little CBB! Good luck with him. Was he tank raised? (You did say he was a baby, right?)

Thanks! He is a baby and he is tank raised according to the LFS.

And CBB police rest assured when he gets too big for this setup I'll either get a bigger tank or stick him in Marc's tank where he'll enjoy the aiptasia farm's endless supply

For NanoGurl:

Makaela my basenji got frustrated with all the tank work today and lack of puppy action. So I snapped some photos of her so you know what I deal with day to day.

First she went and sat by the door and yodeled until I took her outside.

"Let me out Dad!"

Then she brought me toys and wouldn't be still until I scratched her belly.

Then finally she let me tend to the QT setup when I bribed her with treats :D

For those of you interested that don't know and haven't seen my post's on NanoGurl's Thread, basenjis are a rare African breed that are not like most dogs. They are barkless (don't be fooled they make lots of noise) and communicate through yodeling. They are kind of cat-like and like attention on their terms (although mine is particularly affectionate for some reason). They are HIGHLY intelligent and hard to train.

Here's a couple videos (NOT MY VIDEOS OR DOGS) of their yodel.
Basenjis Yodeling
How and Why they yodel

And they may very well be the cutest puppies ever (NOT MINE EITHER):

That dog looks very cool. I have a Shiba Inu. The breed is also barkless and behaves cat like in their affection. He makes such funny noises when he gets exited! We all love him.

That's what NanoGurl has that we were comparing it to! I love Shiba's and my next door neighbor has one that I want. So fun.

I love the look of Basenji's for smaller dogs. Very cute. I remember hearing about being barkless but I'll have to check out those vids when I can play sound (wife sleeping).

Shiba Inu's are cute too. And I'm not a small or fuzzy dog lover. Their tail kills me :D

Maybe we should have a dog post off :D

LOL! Leave it up to Eric to ignore all the posting today about my tank and hijack my thread/open for more dog postings. :lmao:

JK Lunchy, bring on the dog pics if you want, I love them dry furry creatures too

:p Thanks, she's a brat but so fun.

That's what my bf says about me =)

I wonder what kind of mix we would get if we bred your dog and my shiba... lol... the ultimate dog from h3ll????

so the flow rate is based upon amount of filter media correct??

so what would be a good powerhead to pump water through it?? maxijet 400,600,900, or 1200???

i guess it depends on the media, but i would probably only run either phosban or carbon in it... from your experience with this reactor, what size powerhead would you recommend??

I've had this thing less than 24 hours, so "experience" may be a bit of an exaggeration. But IMHO if you drilled out the inlet hole a little a 400 would provide plenty of flow to keep up with the recommend rates.

I used a 1200 b/c it's what I had on hand.

For any other info. than that you'll have to wait until I have more experience with the unit or contact Magnavore.
