Quiverfull's Biggle Juice Expeeiment

So, after all the encouragement from my heroes on this board, I have taken your advice and started my own thread. I have been in the hobby since childhood and have migrated to sps over time. I think I joined RC in 2001. I have had various systems over time and have been through some horrendous crashes (mostly due to the Ohio weather knocking out my power - not an issue since I bought a generator:angryfire:). I have had my current set up for about 3 years. It is mostly SPS but with a few flubber items (wife likes the "flowy" ones).

I have learned much from the board over time and follow the SPS Keepers forum pretty religiously. I have to thank Andrew (Biggles) for his insights into reef keeping over the past year or so on his threat (Splash of Color - http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2529874). I like simple with low maintenance and I have to say I have been impressed with his methods and have put them to the test in my system over the past several months and this post http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=24477289&postcount=1203 is the result. I have to say, my sps really took off after instituting the recommendations from Andrew. Others that have influenced me are ReefMutt, ReefVet, Debora, Mhucasey, Sahin, Acronic, BigE, Oldude, Markalot, cFloor, and most of the regular threads in the SPS keepers forum.

Here is a summary of the main set up (I have a second smaller set up that is just up and running to someday be for those special sps):

DT: 120g Oceanic 4'x2'x2' dual corner overflows. Built into wall with fish room behind. Bare botton, and live rock.

Lighting: (Single fixture)
1. 250wDE HQI x 2 running Phoenix 14K DE bulbs (tried others but like this the best). (7 hours)
2. T5 54w x 2 Blue + (10 hours)
3. T5 24w x 2 Blue + and Coral + (12 hours) over frag rack

Filtration: (simple)
Skimmer: Orphek 3000 with DC pump run at full speed.
Rubbermaid 100g stock tube (filled about 1/2) with live rock.

Estimated total water volume about 150gallons.

Other equipment:
Neptune Apex controller
Neptune DOS and monitored reservoirs
300w EboJager x 2 controlled by Apex
Iwaki WMD40RLT main circulation
MP40 x 3
reef link
5 stage RO DIx2 for water supply
Tunze Osmolator for top off
fan over surface of DT for cooling - controlled by Apex

Additives:
ESV 2 part at 80ml per day each part.
Koral Color 5ml per day
Lugol's solution: 1.5 drops per day (dosed 1 drop then 2 drops on consecutive days)

Maintenance:
20% water change every 2 to 4 weeks with Reef Crystals.
dosing Koral color and Lugol's daily by hand
clean glass daily.
Feeding auto feeder pellets and flake 4 times per day
Frozen food 1 time per day in evening.

Fish:
Yellow tang
Fairy wrasse x 2
Potter's Dwarf Angel
Starry Blenny
Green reef chromic x 6

Inverts:
astrea snails
Trochus snails
peppermint shrimp x 2 (I think - they only come out at night)
emerald crabs x 2

Here are some iPhone unretouched images (waiting on my gel filter to come):

Awesome! A very nice start to your thread:). Some FTS and shots of the sump and filtration will be on the way, yes?

If this is the beginning of the experiment you're doing really well already! Nice shots. Let's see under the hood!

So are you doing the full juice or just the color? I'm asking because I use kz trace, and was thinking about just trying the KC for the manganese...

Wow, Very nice looking corals! Looking forward to seeing more, maybe a FTS and a shot of the fish room. I swear, I enjoy my fish room as much or more than my display. haha. Following along

For a second there I thought you were going to start with the biggle juice to try to improve your colors. I was going to wish you good luck because those colors are awesome! Reading it again, I see that these are after pics. Well, the experiment has clearly been a success. Keep the pics coming!

I'll add you to the list of tanks that have convinced me to give the biggle juice a try. I'm going to start next week.

Happy to see you starting your own thread, your tank deserve it!!

How is your nitrate and phos ?? How much do you aim it for?

If you don't have thread, please start one.
I'd love to see your results.

Greg, I'm also curious about your n and p levels.
Your shots above really don't seem very blue to me.. Not sure you really need gels.
Do you have an fts for us to gawk at?
Also, just curious, are you into archery?

I'm out of town and won't be able to post more images of the room, sump, etc until I get back tomorrow. It's a pretty simple set up.

Andrew suggested that I just use the Lugol's and the Koral color since I am doing frequent water changes.

Thanks. The funny thing is my nitrate and phosphate have always been 0 for both. Tested multiple times with a Salifert test kit.

See above, nitrate and phosphate 0. Have the gel filter on the way so we'll see. I did turn off the T5s for the pictures. Not really into archery, just have a lot of kids!

Great looking stuff! I have always had a soft spot for turbinaria reniformis and in particular the purple variety. I am diggin' the way you have infused them with acropora, very nice.

This tanks has been up for probably 15 years but has morphed into an SPS dominated system in the past 2.5 years and continuing to evolve in that direction.
