Quoyi parrotfish reef safe?

How are everybody's parrots doing?

Mine is doing great, in the new display with the rest of my fish now. He's grown at least an inch. Got to play with a new camera so here are a couple shots just for fun:

Mine is doing well also, trying to get rid of a maculiceps and 8 chromis to make the tank less crowded for my Quoyi, since he is the king of the tank in my eyes.

You all have some good looking fish.
My princess is doing very well. Probably put on an inch as well. I really wish she wouldn't stripe up when I pull out the camera. For some reason she likes to put on her camouflage (camera shy, I guess). It's a shame you all can't see her when she doesn't have the stripes showing. She's absolutely beautiful when she doesn't show her stripes...

It's funny that yours is shy, mine wants to be the center of attention anytime I'm near the tank and photo bombs everyone else :)

She looks pretty fat though. Eating lots of pellets?

She is definitely an attention hog. She just doesn't like the camera for some reason. LOL...

She has put on allot of girth since I got her. She eats pellets with gusto, but goes absolutely nuts for clams on the half shell. She'll pretty much bully my triggerfish away from the clams to get her share. My tang taught her how to eat nori off of a rubberband, and my powerheads stay clean from her grooming. Long story short, she eats anything I put in the tank. Love this fish!!!

Everyone that comes over to see my tank look past all of my other fish, and always ask what kind of fish she is. As far as I know, I'm the only one in this city with a parrotfish, and many reefers here have never heard of or seen one before.

Quoyi Parrotfish?

Quoyi Parrotfish?

This is my first post on this forum so i would like to welcome myself. The reason i am posting is that i stopped by petco this evening and found a fish that was labeled as a "Princess Parrotfish". I have seen many of the Quoyi Parrots on the Divers Den and this fish appeared to be the same. After checking it out for several minutes i decided to pull the trigger on this beauty. The price was way to good to pass up ($44.99). The fish is roughly 6" and has great color.

I came home and put him in QT and he seems to be doing well. I just want to verify with you guys that this is a Quoyi Parrot and not a Princess. It certainly appears to be a Quoyi to me.

Now the kicker to this is i currently have a 3" initial phase Quoyi in my display. In fact it is the same exact fish pictured in post #259 of this thread as i purchased that specimen from the divers den. This fish has not grew very much if any and his color has not changed one bit. I am curious to know how the behavior will be if i add the new terminal phase Quoyi to the tank with the existing one?

Here is what i just purchased this eve...

Nice grab, at most LFS the Quoyi (which is what you have) is often labeled incorrectly as a princess or other parrot. Make sure you Prazipro the Quoyi, especially from a petco. How big is your tank that the other parrot is in currently? I think you will have issues if the tank isnt large (700g+) My Quoyi decides sometimes he doesn't care for my melenarus much and my Quoyi is 6.5-7" and the wrasse is 3-3.5". I believe that usually they don't play nice with like species

I don't think 2 quoyi's in one tank will do well together. They go ape sh** at the sight of their reflection...

Nice snag, though... I was sold a princess that was labeled as a quoyi.

Yeah killer deal, sounds like you to PP and get it eating well and you make a quick Benjamin Franklin. IMO this is a must have fish, full of personality and very striking.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 180 gallon that will be upgraded to a 300 in a few months. I am still undecided about adding the new fish with my existing one. Part of me thinks it will work because the smaller Quoyi is still in the initial phase. The new Quoyi is clearly a terminal phase male.

Question i have about quarantine.. Is there any noticable signs i should look for for internal parasites? I do not have prazipro at the moment. I do have cuppermine and formalin ms. I have not treated the qt with anything yet as i am trying to get him to eat and feel a little more comfortable. I have heard formalin is good for any parasite but is more risky to use. Any feedback on this?

Make sure you have a glass tank for the Quoyi. They will sratch the heck out of an acrylic, as they have a habit of scraping the sides of the tank. I've had one in my 465 gallon SPS reef for about a year, and he is great.

Give it time to start eating before you do any treatment. This should give you some time to get the proper meds on hand as well.

I treated mine with cuppramine and prazi. His eating slowed a little with the prazi treatment, so make sure you ramp it up slowly to the recommended level...

Also: If you decide to try to keep it, try putting the QT tank right up against the glass of your DT. This will give the fish a chance to see eachother, and you can get a heads up on how they will react once they are in the same tank. It's not a guarantee, but a month, or two within eyesight of eachother may help you make a prediction. I had good luck doing this with my potters wrasse. Even my yellow tang was used to it, and didn't harass it once it entered the DT...

No real indicators of "actual" internal issues will evident for a month or so since most fish haven't ate or fed well after being captured weeks prior to you ever receiving them. The fish comes from the Java area (Australia) and after being at a holding facility with other fish I wouldn't risk it. Let us know how it goes when you add them together in the same tank. I wouldn't do it especially since when mine see it's reflection it goes ape sh*t!

My Princess Parrot and Male Bluejaw Trigger have not been getting along for about the past two weeks. All was fine until the trigger started doing the mating dance with the female BlueJaw.

Not really sure what to make of this. Could the male trigger see the parrot as competition?

I would guess that it is because the BT is feeling a little frisky? I have been having issues with my Melenarus being a little terror towards my Quoyi for the last month or so and opening his mouth like wrasse will do. Not sure if it is because they are both males and have similar colors?? The wrasse is much smaller than the parrot, but that doesn't seem to stop the wrasse. Long story short my Melenarus is about to find a new home.
