Raising PH up?

I always found that my ph runs low when the house is closed up becuase carbon dioxide drops ph and increased oxygen raises it.
Chemicals that raise ph normally raise alk as well leading to other problems. The chemicals that raise ph without raising alk only work in the short term and cost a lot. Chasing ph numbers becomes a pain in the butt quickly. If the corals are doing well don't sweat it. If you think that raising ph will cure problems then figure out a way to get fresh air into the house such as a cracked window or a fresh air line leading to a skimmer.

True that, Jeff. Unless, if topoff is being done with RO, switching to kalk will help to maintain (not raise to) a higher pH.

before you do anything what are your ph numbers? High and low.

and why do you think your pH is low to begin with? Like it was said above, chasing pH is a futile effort. If your Cal/ALK/Mg numbers are good your pH will fall in naturally.

im using the soda lime on my skimmer intake and it raises it up a bit. but im switching to kalk in my ato. maybe ill switch over from my calcium reactor

Excellent point Joel. I use kalk and it helps. I can't believe I forgot to mention it lol.

You wouldnt believe the number of clients that I had to tell to throw their pH meter in the garbage/closet because they were chasing numbers. As others have said, dripping kalk can help to keep it slightly higher, but for the most part, it will fall in line the best it can with available o2, and if everything else is in ballance.

I agree with Jeff nothing like a crack window to keep your PH in line with what is needed for your system.

I am moving in a couple weeks and will finally have an opportunity to run my skimmer air line to the outside. I'm kind of worried how the air temp will affect water temp though. Will 90+ degree outside air heat up the water too much (I don't run a chiller)? or 32- degree air cool it too much (less worried about this with heaters)?

Thanks guys for all your infomation. My pH sits around 7.89 up to 8.01 I have 180 gallon tank and was looking to use baking soda to rasie the PH to 8.2-8.4 has anyone tried this method? Is it true if your PH is lower than your Alk is low also?

is there a benefit it you get your coral up to 8.3?

Mdefo don't do use baking soda unless you need to raise your alk. I agree with everyone that chasing a higher PH is just a waste of time. i am guilty myself with chasing the PH dragon.
