This statement came up in another thread so I thought I would place it in its own thread to gain the proper exposure and feedback.

1. Please post a picture of a rare zoanthid or palythoa that you own.

2. Then tell us why it is rare.

3. Also tell us which ones in your experience are the "harder to keep zoas" and why they are so hard or impossible to keep?

Thank you in advance, MUCHO REEF

one area to another would be totally different but uncommon(rare I get it) for the area, yes

i find that large orange palys don't like me very much.yes i have grown them but something i do allows them to melt away. ones garden of a species, as to death in mine. i am currently growing about 50 or so different colors, yet to my a vale orange tends to be my nemesis. it saddens me. but i am having a good run of large red broken striped ones,w/green mouths. 2nd try from same colonie.

I know a lot of people like pictures so this thread caters to just about everyone.

Thanks, Mucho

I can't seem to keep sopranos. Otherwise everything else seemed too grow just fine. I am redoing my tank and sold off the majority of my zoas though. I will get the sopranos again though

i'll bite

i'll bite

this one (on the left) i bought from Vivid in LA. they call it "Vivid Pink Dragon" .
last i checked, they weren't selling it anymore, maybe the mother colony died?
anyway i think it is rare because nobody else (around here) has them.
more importantly, i love the color. they also have an unusual growth pattern for a paly (which i think they are) they grow very tight (low) to the rock they are on.
on the right side are pink elephants for comparison. pic taken with cell phone...

also the most expensive zoa/paly i have ever purchased. they are not, however hard to keep...

the one on the left or the right? cause they are the same paly or zoanthus gigantus which are all over the place. Hell you can get them on eb and every etailer has them under different names.

how is that at " TRAP " ? just wondering

Mayjong yes, it is just search every etailer out there, hell even ebay LOL

i bit, now show me a pic of the paly i posted.
1 picture.... you claim you have seen them everywhere, not me. show me 1 pic, shouldn't be too hard since they are everywhere....
just 1 pic
here is a little better pic.
obviously, the one on the right is common, and is posted as many different things.
i'm talking the one on the left, which i originally took a pic of next to the one on the right, to compare the two.
if you say they are the same, you need an eye doctor...

well that makes it easier since now you can see the detail. From the original pic the first one made it look like at first glance but since now you provided a better pic which shows the definition of the polyp, the variances and lines out of the oral disk, it is a different polyp to the ones in the right.

Don't be one to start stuff with about eye doctor and such. trying to be in a intellectual talk here. Not gonna make any assumptions that you already had that picture but decided to show the other one which clearly didn't show the originally details as to make anyone not seem like they know what they are talking about.

If the more clear pic was showed first 10 out 10 most woulda told you it was different polyps. But its definitely a nice one. Good color pattern and design.

in the first pic i thought they were the same. the second pic you can see the differance. they look very common to me. i hope you didnt pay alot. $10 ?

Common or uncommon its a nice looking polyp and would look awesome as a large colony. Good luck growing it and hope you have luck with em. If they aren't around anymore I hope you well in getting them to grow and great that it's not hard to keep.

sorry, just want people to know this game....lol
mayjong, those are very nice.

also would love to see one of these also:)

thanks, i'll take a pic of the colony and post here. that pic is from last summer.

i thought i was posting the good pic the first time, the other pic is now deleted from my phone. (you know, you take 10 pics trying to get a good one)

as for being common, not so sure. i haven't seen any like them. keep in mind every once in a while new corals (or new morphs) do enter the trade. i have another new one (lps , i forget the scientific name and it doesn't have a common name...yet) that it took my LFS over two weeks to identify. he has been in the business for years (like old school, when tyree and others were just reefers), goes to his supplier in LA every month, and had never seen it until it came in with a shipment. of course, i HAD to grab a frag...
