Rare To You Swap - coral suggestions

My pictures leave much to be desired, but for now they will have to do. Here are a couple of blatos, that I will use the description that was provided to me for :

Mint green blasto w/ baby blue center

Green blasto w/ purple center

Some red on red and red on blue blasto merlettis (sp?)

and a blasto that we are nursing back to health (it still has some interesting colors to it already) -- It looks more like a blasto but the colors look like an acan.. but I am still going with blasto (but I could be wrong :)).

and here is an acan that we have had for some time now.. indo I do believe ? (still learning how to tell the difference ?)

OT: have any pics of the yellow belly tang?.. maybe if you had two you could throw them in the swap.. :D

Tang is still too small for fragging. :D

Here are what I got:

rainbow monti
superman monti
palawanensis monti
purple haze monti

They're all came from Rommel.

It was pointed out that I left off one of the acan colonies :)

It was also pointed out that what I thought was a blasto (the one being nursed back to health) based on it's skeleton, was in fact an acan lord. Also, I checked and had mistated about the acans. I have no idea if they are indo or non-indo, only the micros are confirmed as non-indo.. so my bad :(

Well, here is the one acan lord colony that I neglected to post (which I don't know how I missed it.. I took the pict and uploaded it to the hosting site.. just forgot to add it to the thread post)

Since we acquired all of these LPS we are now looking into upgrading our lighting to include more blue/actinic in our lights... 10Ks are fine (even great) for most SPS, but the LPS, zoas and what not really benefit from a bit of actinic. Unfortunately I doubt that we will have them upgraded before this swap takes place, so these picts will have to suffice for now :)

I also almost forgot, we have a good bit of the orange crush acan echinata (that one of our fish seems to like to cover with sand...rest assured that the orange crush was "resuced" from the sand burial at sea :)).

agreed, nice 'micro micro mountain' sparkss.. :D

and yeah, same question regradng 'indo,' as i've heard contradictory references to the use of 'indo' as well, does it refer to the country or a specified area of ocean or something else entirely..

I just wish that the pictures would do them justice. Like that last acan lord colony picture.. that is very green in person (even under 10ks), but it just looks washed out in the pictures. guess I need to learn how to use this camera a whole lot better :(

Oh, and aside from having 0 actinics, all of the shots were through the glass, none were top down. While top down shots look great, they really don't well represent what the coral will look like 99% of the time in our tanks (since most of us look at them through the glass, for the most part).

Mike, I was under the impression that indo meant indo-pacific, but I am just getting into the whole LPS scene, so I am learning as I go.

out of curiosity what does "indo" mean.. I assume indonesian, or does it mean indo/pacific? So tongan stuff would be "indo"

Typically it refers to stuff exported from Indonesia just like stuff labelled HI is from Hawaii, PI from the Phillipines, etc ;)

And I do not belive Tonga lies in the Indo Paficic region ;)

The Indo-Pacific is the aggregate of the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, and the minor seas between the two in the general area of Indonesia.

OK, I know, wikipedia isn't always accurate, but in this case they are :) <reminds me of the Colbert Show ongoing poking at wikipedia entries>

I realize that Mr. Smartypants Geography teacher :P

Just I've commonly heard the phrase "Indo-Pacific" and naturally I assumed that to mean pacific corals as well as those near Indonesia, however the term "Indo" I didn't know if they were being specific about location or if it was just Indo-Pacific chopped down to an even shorter phrase. That and Karl mentioned non-indo SPS corals, him being a collector... of sorts ;)... made me question the whole "indo" term, because not too long ago Tongan stuff came in like gangbusters (still is?) so made me wonder if Tonga was grouped into the "Indo" region.

So HA! Now that I thoroughly explained myself, I thank you for clarifying exactly what is meant by "Indo"... however whether or not others mean the same I don't know. My "non-indo" acans from Tonga don't seem to get as much play as Japanese Acans :)

Scenesters seem to like to use terms incorrectly Tom :)

And just about EVERY lighting company incorrectly labels the kelvin rating of their bulbs, but sometimes we just take what is said to us as gospel until otherwise corrected.

I have GOT to get some higher kelvin lamps to bring out our LPS colors better !!!!... I am going to order one set tomorrow from MD (IC 400W ballast and Ushio/BLV Nepturion 14K bulb) Our ppfd will drop about 30 points, but our cct will skyrocket (and the electrical consumption will be only maringally more.. like $10 a month more). Those bulbs show a huge spike around 440 - 450nm, so it should help the flourescence :). We should have it by Friday so I can swap out one of ours this weekend. If it works out then I will pull the trigger to convert our second light as well (and kill another credit card... *sigh*). So possibly look for new/better pictures by the end of this weekend (hopefully... at least for one half of our tank :)). Normans pictures are really shaming me :(

Heh... I've been sloppy in taking blurry pics lately. After seeing pics from the *real* photographers in the club, it's like there's no point any more with my toy camera, haha :)

1st four pics are under 20k XM, 5th one is 20k Radium, and last 2 are 14k Hamilton, if I remember right. The 14k Hamilton was particularly nice for zoa growth and color.

theres not a whole lot of ppl interested in softies or lps, only colored sticks :P

thought i'd throw out a few just to see if anybody had some nice palys/zoas/micros/acans
