Red Bug Treatment

Being trying to find interceptor from local vets even 1800-pet meds no luck seems company had to shut down production for a short while.. I do have Sentinel though has same active ingredients milbemycin oxime but has lufenuron also this is supposed to keep larvae flees from developing an exoskeleton.. any thought on using this as a treatment ? appreciate any feedback

Hey Dynamic Reef, I just recently posted a similar thread regarding an Interceptor substitute, Trifexis. Doesn't seem to be a ton of information available on here regarding the heartworm medications that have the MO + an extra additive (which the Trifexis has). Anyhow, I'll be paying attention to this thread.

Find someone with a dog and ask them to get interceptor for their dog from a vet if a vet wont give it to you. My vet gave it to me with on problem so Im sure there is plenty of stock out there

They only had the interceptor chews. I used them with no ill effects

yeah I'm finding this out as well. I have a dog and he has sentnal heartworm which is made by the same company as interceptor but has lufenuron which is a bacterial compound that is supposed to keep fleas from developing an exoskeleton and is non-toxic to humans fore-go the slight case of acid reflux that you may or may-not have from eatting one. thinking it is worth a shot dont want this problem to get outta hand.. its not bad atm saw a couple bugs on one coral but dont want it to become EPIC!!!

I don't think the straight Interceptor (MO on its own) is available yet. The combo products do appear to be (the Interceptor Spectrum contains praziquantel). The praziquantel is apparently the same as Prazipro, which is used for treating flukes in fish, and is reef safe with the exception of worms and feather dusters. Anyhow, I'm planning on using the Spectrum product to treat my tank. I'm with you, even though my RB problem seems mild, I'd still like to treat.

I read an article that interceptor would be available some time in August. I currently have red bugs and have a miniature daschund but their is no vet that is currently carrying interceptor. I hope they release it soon.

Just a little 4 hour update


I basically took one pill crushed it up completly.. though about shaving off the flavoring coat but hey might as well let the RB's have some beef while i try to kill them :lmao:

Keep in mind my system is 120G with over sized sump I say I have about 150 gallons water Total water volume - rock etc..

I did 1 pill because I "Educated Guess" AKA Pure Dumb luck figured that since Interceptor is so concentrated that Sentinel was not since it has 2 ingredients

then I mixed well with a cup of my own tank water.. BTW I shut down my Rowaphos reactor and removed airline from skimmer to ensure water hit every part of my system.

thus far I am seeing mucus from the RB's and they seem to be dying off ; no ill effects on my larger inverts thus far fish are swimming corals still have PE. I plan on running this treatment for 12hrs then willl inspect the tank further I plan on doing 3 Full treatments IF this works looks good thus far... just like if i were treating with interceptor

This Sentinel is made by the same Manufacture as Interceptor.

Wish me luck.. If you see a mushroom cloud over texas its just me blowing myself up :thumbsup:

Sounds adventurous! Did you do any testing on individual corals first? Or just straight to dosing your display?

although I am adventurous Im not Crazy ie.. I will never skydive without a backup ... I did test a small granulosa wish i would have taken pics.. hindsight 20/20 though but I did the bath just like instructed with interceptor seemed to be effective at Double the dose because of the other ingredient.

just keeping my fingers crossed really.. The 8 -12hr mark will really give more insight I think

I'm getting paranoid, I thought I might have AEFW on a newer piece I acquired (and dipped prior to putting in my tank), but a dip I just dip did not reveal anything (thankfully).

going on 8hrs+ only tragedy thus far is my Cleaner shrimp(cause i couldnt catch him) and a couple crabs/snails that I couldnt reach to pull out or they were hiding....

examining my smoothskin and deepwater acros the most as RBs from what i read like them the most. my green carolinia, turaki, granulosa and other seem to be pest free my ORA pearlberry had ton of them around its base they all seem to be gone no sign of them :uzi:

only time will tell with 7 days between treatments to kill larvae and eggs and any RB's lurking in the shadows

ok 12hrs is up.. Started protien skimmer backup and running carbon now.. will continue to monitor for 7 days.. skimmer went little hyper-active as to be expected turned it way down will resume normal skimmage in the morning.. Looking good so far time will tell if it was an effective treatment.. gonna get up around 3 or 4 am and hit tank with led flashlight to see if anything scurring around.. didn't see any ill effects on sponges or anyother tank life.. say shrimp and couple snails that i missed or couldn't reach.

That is good news. Your coral looks healthy in that pic, I agree that it is better to deal with the issue now even if minor, it will likely only get worse and I'm sure a more stressed coral isn't the type you want to put through further stress with treatment. I'm sure they will be stronger than ever after you are done.

Woke up this morning everything looks great ...PE on my acros is back out water is clear and no sign of stress on the system.. skimmer has returned to normal. Looks liked I'm in the clear from now on.. I will not take my dipping for sake. Got lazy got redbugs lesson learned
