I'd still like for you to keep your eyes out for a nice royal blue one though ;)
Thanks

Like this 12 inch monster?:D

Problem is I think any newly imported specimen will likely gape a little. If it were me, I'd chance it because it looks in all other respects to be healthy. Unfortunately any anemone is a bit of a crapshoot at first.

Please let me know what you guys think of the mouth.
My experience has been horrible starting with specimens that gape, even as little as depicted.

Warning bells are going off for me :(

I'd generally agree with you on that one Scott. But my green gigantea did that for the first week, I thought, hoo boy here we go, we all know how this will end, etc. etc. -- but over a year later now it's still with me. It did it for the first week. So I'd generally consider it a "not good thing" but not a guarantee of failure.

It IS always a crapshoot at first though. And Murphy's Law says that the more colourful ones will be more delicate of course. I once tried a purple carpet, pretty sure it was a haddoni, that thing melted within 2 or 3 days, it was awful. Looked great for all of 24 hours then started gaping and going downhill.

Well, I have until Monday. They promised they wouldn't ship it if it wasn't healthy looking. I'll call them first thing in the morning and see if it is still gaping or not. We'll just have to go from there. They have had it over 10 days now. We'll see if the next day makes any difference. If its going down hill, it should do so tomorrow or early Monday.
Keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks again for all the help.

Not only is the mouth a problem, I think a bigger problem is lack of tentacle density in the middle of the anemone. In a healthy haddoni you should have a very difficult time noticing the rows of tentacles going from the mouth to the edge. In that red carpet the rows are very obvious. IMO that do not signify a bright future for that anemone. Its too bad because it is beautiful.
Compare your pics to Ricordiaking' avatar and My Fish R D3ad's pic of his blue to see what I'm taking about.

I concur with what Phil said. Low tentacle density near the mouth means that the anemone is not 100 percent healthy. That just adds on to the problem that the mouth is open after 10 days which tells me you shouldn't get it or at least wait a little bit longer to see what happens. Have the store try feeding the anemone yet?

I don't know about that... I have seen two different types, 1 is filled all around with no lines leading to the mouth. The second has these lines which I hear from many is a desirable feature when purchasing a carpet anemone.

however, the mouth does seem to have some issues. But If u feel that you have the time and money. I would give it a shot!

good luck

What we're saying is IF there are tentacles around the mouth and the density is low then there could be trouble.

Wow, you guys are really bringing me down ;)
I'll call the store first thing in the morning to see how it handled the weekend and I'll tell them of 'our' concerns. I guess that if it looks the same, I'll probably risk it. $200 with free shipping is a great deal for an anemone like this. If I were to purchase one locally, with just as much risk, it would have been double that. Heck, a blue hadonni costs $115 locally so $200 for this one isn't bad.
We'll see what they say tomorrow. I'll keep everyone posted.
Thanks again for all the great advice and suggestion.

Well, it's Monday ! Any updates ?
Its only 7:30 AM where I'm at .. They won't be in the store until 11. I'll post when I know something. Thanks :)

I just spoke with Dave from coralreeffarms.com. He says the red carpet continues to look well. It has remained fully inflated, is very sticky, reactive, and most important, it is eating. He fed it a silverside this morning and it ate well. He says that the mouth is only open about 1/2" at most. He is comfortable holding for a few more days to assess its condition and if it maintains this current health, we'll ship it Wednesday for Thursday arrival.
Dave has been very understanding of my concerns and has not once had any reservation about my order or the questions I've posed. He is even going to email me a pic of the anemone Wednesday morning prior to shipping so I can confirm its condition and make my decision then. How's that for customer service!!
I'll keep you guys posted.

Eating and very sticky are great signs. I think if I was in your position I would most probably buy the carpet. When's the last time you saw a red carpet going for $200? =)
