red gig

Was at a LFS this weekend and inquired about their Gig in the show tank that was across the tank from a large haddoni.. The owner mentioned that they had a red gig.. I answered with, wow your'e one of the only people in the community that would have one. Said he can get'em often but are over $1k a piece. He kept saying carpet but not Gig.. Sadly I think some people who are not as Gig obsessed as we all are, just interchange the two and just call them carpets.

It probably doesn't help that a lot of gigs coming in from the wild has tentacles near the size of Haddonis...

The Johnson Atoll was where the US military did a lot of weapon testing and is a site for disposal of chemical weapons. The Eniwetok Atoll is where the US disposed of radioactive material.
I am not sure about the Johnson atoll but the Eniwetok Atoll will be radioactive for a long time.
When I cam from Vietnam in 1975, we stop at Wake Island for about 2 weeks. We were told that we should not catch fish and eat them (we Vietnamese catch and eat everthing :)) because of the radioactivity issue of the fish around Wake Island. Wake Island is the B52 bomber base in the Pacific

I hate I did not stop in the store last Aug. on our motorcycle trip up north.
Man. people up there are crazy. Are there any traffice laws in NY?
I think it looks exactly like a gigdoni.

Yeah Johnson just has some minute particles that floated in the air from chem weapon disposal via incineration type stuff.

Any critters from these areas might just self illuminate, at night too... ;)

i only want more pics to drool at not for id purpose... haha ...

Exactly. Since these anemone morphs are so rare I wouldn't tire of having a dozen photos of the same anemone - at different times, in different positions, etc. I only saw one "pink" gigantea in my life, and it was about 25 years ago, and at the time I didn't have a camera so I have nothing to go off of other than my memory. It was in a small LFS that normally didn't have fancy saltwater stock, and I stopped in just to look around (can't pass up a fish store if I have time). It was completely bleached, but massive - sitting in a plexi tank with nothing but pale fluorescent lighting. Even now I can't say with 100% certainty that it was a gigantea and not a haddoni because I don't have photos and my memory could be messing with me. At the time I certainly THOUGHT it was a gigantea.

For what its worth, I have spoken to a number of collectors / divers who live where gigantea are common. I have never found anyone who recalls seeing a red morph in the wild.

....
Long 1/2 live radioactivity is what I am worry about. Given enough heat all the chemical stuff will be no more. I assume they know which chemicals need to be burn up and how much heat needed to do it. Johnson Atoll is no longer under Military control

Even though those verracue are colored, there is something about them that doesn't look gigantea-ish to me. Maybe they are too small, maybe there are too many, I don't know, it just doesn't look quite right. Like I said before, Fautin reports that haddoni can have colored verracue. That is why I would like to see other pictures, because one or two pics is not enough to make a positive ID IMO.

Here's a few more terrible pictures

Thanks Jason,

When you lifted the "skirt" to show the verracue the edge tentacles looks very haddoni-ish. Those new pictures don't look haddoni-ish at all.

Now I don't have to defend/doubt myself anymore when I said I saw a couple in the '90's. :)

Maybe you should sent it to me so I can be absolutely sure. :D

Is this going to be a 'check-out' situation? I mean I have my LFS loyality card and my WAMAS card... Will that work to check it out?

Thank you for sharing!! The more the merrier! Really nice to see it looking so healthy!

BTW Jason - can you share a little more about its tank environment? Specifically, what lighting it is under?

It is in our 580g display, bottom right hand side (36 inches down) Tank is lit by 6 overdriven 400w Radiums, VHO actinic, and Reefbrite LED strips. Aside from that, it is very much an sps dominated tank, so plenty of random flow, weekly 200g water changes, manual dosing. Lot's of iodine!

I'm all about a gut reaction, and after viewing the most recent photos my gut tells me that it's a gig.

Okay Phil, I believe you now. :love1:

mind elaborating? Iodine as a dip or regular additive to that aquarium? Any specific form/brand?

Why hasn't somebody posted a picture of your incredible aquarium?

<--- PS: still no Tilefish over here. Might not be compatible with gigantea. Any thoughts/opinions?
