Are the stock RSM lights strong enough to keep an anenome? Thanks!

Quick answer... Yes. My Flame tip is doing quite well thank you.

im thinking of buying a RSM but would like to see setups without mods, since this is goiung to set me back and wont have money to make any mods anytime soon i would like how the look without mods, just as it comes out of the box, thanks

if you look back through the splits you will see plenty of pics. Most tanks, even with mods look pretty stock. Common mods range from an extra pump to a better skimmer ie the Tunze 9002. But from the front of the tank, all you can see is my koralia #2, looks stock.

Go to www.redseamax.com and you can see lots of set ups, unmodified and working really well. We have many thousands of Max's out there working really well. mine is probably the most neglected Max but it's unmodified and works perfectly.

Hi,

Just wanted to say hello - I've been a Max owner for almost 2 years now, being lucky enough to have one of the first tanks available. I've experienced just about all of the teething problems that the early Max's had, but I'm glad to say that 2 years down the line my RSM is still doing nicely. Although I've occassionally lurked in these forums, most of my online activity has been confined to a smaller mostly UK-based forum, though I do recognise a couple of names on here from there as well!

Anyway, I thought I would post on here as I've been trying out a skimmer box for the Max that Red Sea are bringing to market within the next couple of months, which makes a BIG difference to the tank. Rather than lose my review in this massive thread, I've posted it here:

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1472828

I should add that although Red Sea provided me with the filter box to review, I'm not affiliated with them in any way, as anyone who is familiar with my input on other forums will hopefully confirm.

It's sad to see this thread wiilt away. The information offered so far has propted us to become an RSM owner. We are glad we did. It would be beneficial to the hobby and reef central to identify this as a genuine long-term interest and place this thread in an position equal to the nano instead of a minor part of it.

Everyone, keep contributing, it is helpful, especially to those of us who do not yet know all the questions to ask to gain the most enjoyment from our hobby/

Hello All,
I have been researching this hoby for years and I am finally getting ready to pull the trigger. I am seriously considering the RSM in silver (with silver stand), does anyone have it in silver? would you mind posting a screen shots of it? Any bad feelings about getting the silver instead of the black.
Thanks in advance!

I am thinking about setting one of these tanks up. I have some questions about modifications. How is the skimmer that comes in the tank. Is it possible to take that skimmer out? If so, which skimmers will fit in its place? Ideally, I am think of adding a Deltec MCE300 or Aqua C remora.

These questions might have been adressed, but the thread has gotten so long!

Thanks!

I want to give that new surface skimmer a shot. Does anyone have a link to another thread with someone that modded the Tunze skimmer for the RSM? I have that skimmer as well and cannot close the back cover. I want to see how someone cut the skimmer cup for the Tunze. Thanks, Joe

Baylisc I have the RSM in silver but use my own stand. I have never once given the silver color a second thought since I got it home. When I bought it at the store I thought I was buying the black one and when they brought the box out of the warehouse to my vehicle I didn't even bother to check. When I got home at first I was kinda of upset but I definitely like it better now. I have a JBJ 12g Nano in black and I think the silver color looks better.

Razzagas The stock skimmer is sub par at best. There are some simple mods that can be done to the skimmer to make the performance a little better. If you remove the stock skimmer the only skimmer on the market that will fit in in its place is the Tunze Nano DOC 9002 skimmer, which is what I have. The only time I have seen the Remora skimmer used the individual had removed the stock hood all together in order to use MH lighting, with the hood removed gave them enough room for the Remora to hang properly on the back.

shramj PM sent.

The Tunze works incredibly well. It pulled darker skimmate the first day then I ever got out of the stock skimmer. I now have a sump/refugium set up with my Max and have the tunze in there. I ran it for a few weeks in the back of the Max but had to take off the rear cover in order for it to fit. I know some people mod'd the skimmer cup to keep the rear cover on.

Can a different temp light bulb be used, or it the only option the stock 55W 10k?

Those are the only lights that will fit properly so yes those are the only option. The lights are not bad. Most of us have been able to keep just about anything in our RSM with the stock lighting with no real issues other than having to place certain corals at different heights in the water. Some people have opted to remove the stock hood all together and go with metal halide lighting as an option.

AH Supply (http://www.ahsupply.com/bulbs.htm) carries several different bulbs that will fit (55w PC with the straight pin base) and even has one that is identified as a 10000K/Actinic, but I have one and it is not the same color as the ones that came with the Red Sea Max (At least when it is running on the ballast supplied by AH Supply.)

I doubt that you will find a better bulb than the one from Red Sea for a reef tank.
