Reef Aquarium 1350 gallons in Bucharest

andy I must say your rock work is amazing. I can't wait to see this project move forward and to see that rock work wet. Rockwork is an art form and really can make any size tank from zero to hero. Yours is awesome!!

Amazing tank and excellent work!!

Andy, from which store did you get Aquatic-nature Calcia lith? Do you know some online shop where to buy it?

Thank you Renta!
I bought mine from Bucharest but I think you should find some in Italy which is closer to Croatia and shipping cost is lower than Romania. It's heavy.

Amazing thread, and an even more amazing house! What a perfect location for an absolutely giant tank!

I do have a question, though. In the rockwork gap on the back wall, what is the striped blue material? Is it going to stay there permanently? I ask because I personally find it to be distracting on such a wonderful tank, but I do agree with Mr. Wilson that there needs to be an opening there as negative space to the back wall.

Thank you so much Alex!

The blue thing in the gap is just styrofoam, which will not stay there. I will have there a backlight in a special box which I hope to look good. :worried:

Wowsers!!! great build Andy - I always wanted to use natural light on an install, but have not yet come across the opportunity. However I was thinking that sunlight might be a little on the warmer spectrum of light which might be a challenge for algae. So without having put anything into practice I was thinking that if I ever got to build an aquarium with skylights or solartubes I was thinking of using some sort of blue film or something to filter the light toward the cooler spectrum. The natural depth of coral reefs benefit from dozens of feet of water above to filter out that red/yellow spectrum so maybe we who use only inches of water can get skylights to cheat a little with some good old translucent material... If one is really cheeky perhaps a translucent film can be designed with a colour gradient on a set of scroll-rollers with the intent to simulate different colour temperatures at different times of the day. Who knows... just a daydream experiment at this point. Beautiful build though... some of us daydream while others build. Great work...!!!!:spin2:

Regards,

Sheldon

Hi Sheldon,

Thank you so much for reminding me about this problem and for the nice words. As a matter of fact my friend Shawn (Mr. Wilson) mentioned me about using a blue filter with the solatubes. Now I only have to find out who produces this kind of filter.

Cheers

Andy

Best rockwork Ive ever seen. Hands down.
I did have a question about your lighting....

Looked like your exclusively channeling in the sun itself. Is that your sole source?Sorry if I missed it somewhere. My reason for asking is your going to be fighting hair algae like no other. The sun's perfect spectrum will ensure that.

What steps are you taking to combat this?

Thank you pheinzig!

As I mentioned earlier, I will use some blue filter to change the solar spectrum. For the night I have 8 CoralVue reflectors with 400W MH, 12000K.

Based on your taste in design, I would also be interested to see what you have in your garage :)

With these three...

...I use the Touareg but soon I might need a school bus who knows :worried:

Just joined RC after watching a couple of the threads, you're build has been fun to follow, a lot of great ideas and techniques coming together, looking forward to seeing it progress!

Andy,

Hold off on skimmers and flow pumps for a few months if you can as there are a few more DC pump options in development. The ABYZZ is an excellent choice that you won't be disappointed in, but the price is a little out of reach for even the most die hard fans.

I just discovered my ABYZZ 420w pumps have a setting for one second increments so I'm having fun with surges and waves. It looks like the smart way of doing it is to use the ABYZZ 215 w models and dial them down to surge mode. Here is a video showing what you can do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFGASFHEWL8

Hi Shawn!

I don't know if I can wait for the flow pumps anymore because I have to put them before the water to close the sides of the background. After that will be more difficult. I was thinking to buy the Tunze pumps and use them with the Profilux controller. I need 9 or 11 of them: 6 on the bottom, 3 in the middle and maybe two close to the surface. I didn't order them yet.
For the skimmer is ok to wait because I haven't decided which one I will buy. I curently have an old DYI becket skimmer with two 9000 LPH pumps which I can use for few months.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you Shawn!

ChingChai, I spent two wonderfull days with Andy and his wife in Orlando so I almost feel like I am sitting at the table with you.
