Hello all so I just upgraded my 24G Nano to a 57 Rimless tank
This was my stock list (hoping for)
Bicolor Angel
Coral Beauty
Purple Dottyback
2 Ocellaris Clowns
Bicolor Blenny
Midas Blenny
Evansi Anthias or Bartlett's Anthias
Firefish, Purple
Six Line Wrasse or Yellow Wrasse
So what Can I keep and what fish will I need to stay away from with out a hood ?
Thanks

I think you'll have the most trouble keeping the firefish, they're pretty jumpy. Mine would sometimes jump up and hit the mesh screen top when I would stick a pipet in the water to feed him.

I've also heard of midas blennies jumping out, but never had one.

All fish have the potential to jump. Firefish and wrasses are particularly prone to it. I personally would not add a sixline in any case.

Yup any can jump out. I have a rimless 120. I love the rimless look but have lost a few nice fish. Also saved a few when I was in the room. I avoid any "known" jumpers but any can jump. That said the fish I have had that haven't jump are tangs, cardinals and chromis. Also my mandarin doesn't jump haha.

I've read about almost every fish on that list jumping. I've seen Blue Tangs jump out of a regular tank, even easier if it's rimless.

That's why I said "any can jump out". Any fish can jump out. Those are just the ones I haven't had jump out ever.

I agree I have seen tangs jump, clownfish etc. Most will jump especially in aggressive tanks.

That being said firefish and most wrasses are guaranteed to jump. I have seen wrasses jump even out of covered tanks. You give them even a 1/2 space they can seem to find it.

When I would stand next to my tank my firefish would splash me from hitting my screen all the friggin time.. half the time they were in my overflow but are easy to get since they jump. I would stick something into the overflow and they would jump out.

To me there are 3 for sure jumpers: firefish, wrasses and jawfish.. With out a top eventually they will jump...

Agreeed on the bottom list.

Thanks I guess I will stay away from firefish, wrasses and jawfish for sure and may look into a glass top for the tank Or a screen

I had a pretty nice super black C-quest Onyx clownfish jump out of 25 gallon rimless cube early this year. Worst loss of my reef keeping to date.

Like it's been said...

All fish can/will jump.

I've turned the lights on in the room or big tank is in and saw a Crosshatch bolt to the top of the tank and hit the screen.

I find rimless tanks an unnecessary hazard and a bad idea altogether, especially here in California. My new tank has extra wide (4") euro-brace all around (with the exception of the overflow corner. Not only minimizes it the risk of fish jumping out along the glass and especially in the corners, but it may also minimize the spillage in case of an earthquake.

As an owner of two rimless tanks I agree. Haha. Certainly both unnecessary and hazardous. However they are awesome :). My rimless 120 has been running for over five years now without issue but I would be a liar if I said I don't sometimes have those my tank exploded nightmares.

To each their own, I guess. Unless my tank is built into a wall, a rimless is a must for me. The aesthetics are worth it and you can recess a screen. I also don't have an earthquake problem in Indiana!:fun4:

Not only with fish, my buddy has a 120 rimless tank and it's almost everyday he says he had to put a snail back into the tank cause they crawled out over the top.
