ReefWaters' 220 Sun Room Reef

hahaha that tank thread was a epic fail wasnt it. It went for years and I never got to get water in her. Maybe you missed it but I did in fact sell the tank and most of the equipment with never setting it up. I sold the tank to a guy that lives close to me and is on here so I'll see if I can get him to post pics....im sure he set it up by now but I haven't seen it. I actually have not had a fish tank setup since Katrina took out my 110. Its the longest I have gone with out a tank in many many many years.

Currently im working on a standard 8' 240gal that will be some fresh water cichlids (going sa/ca now RW). I just cant dump the $ into starting a fresh reef and re-buying everything. And I dont have the time to keep it up, so some cichlids should be very easy...cheap...and give me something to look at for now.

Hope im not mucking up your thread RW but here is the 240 with two of the three 400w MH setups I still have. I might use them on this tank with different bulbs and 24" off the water.

So Marc, are you wearing a special helmet that links your brain directly to RC??

When I'm editing the current issue of Reefkeeping Magazine, I tend to be very in tune with RC. ;)

Nolacls - nice tank. Add salt, and get a clownfish. That's how it always starts. ;) Freshwater fish? Never!

lol...I know I know...I had my 110 reef for over 8 years and fresh before that and some fresh during the 110. I actually really like some big ol sa/ca cichilds and you cant beat how cheap and easy they are. I will have a reef again one day once I have the time and place to set it up. I just dont want another small reef and for a big fancy one...welll its not cheap and easy lol. So for now it will be my 240fresh, my 300gal koi/turtle pond, and the common snapping turtle in my office.

NOLS, you could never muck up my thread. Your tank was a big inspiration in getting my plans started on this one believe it or not. I personally love a well done cichlid tank. Just dont post any pictures of that tank with 2, 12 lb Oscar's in it! :D

Jonathan, looking at the number of posts you and Marc have, and when you joined RC, I believe you may be wearing your own RC helmet!

Why thanks a lot RW! I am glad my thread was not a total fail job hahaha. And there might not be any oscars in my tank. I like them...but I am going to go with some nicer stuff. End up with maybe 5-7 jumbo size 14"+ fish in there.....maybe one of those pikes ;)

I just noticed your post count Marc...dang!

I did do a lot of posting in '06 & '07 as the reef learning curve is indeed a steep one. But Marc has me beat hands-down. So do many others. And Marc has a wicked response time. He would have made a great abulance driver. :D

Okay, I'm having major problems figuring out the networking on my ACIII. I know a lot of you have one. Can you guys try to answer some basic questions? I cant seem to understand the manual and I'm having no luck on the Neptune forum either. And please use layman's terms as much as possible. This stuff confuses me so badly.

I would love an explanation of some of the terms I am encountering in the AC and AquaNotes manuals. Not having a full understanding really makes things difficult. So lets get down and dirty. :D What is an IP address? What is a port? A subnet mask?

What is the gaming adapter doing exactly? What settings are required to make it communicate with my router? Should I consider some other means of connecting my lap top to the ACIII or is it really best to bite the bullet and try to run a hard wire Ethernet cable to my router?

Why is connecting to the ACIII through the router so much different than trying to connect to it remotely through the internet? What is all this about a web server?

I think that should get us started. And as you can see, ANY help, no matter how basic would be GREATLY appreciated here.

thanks,

RW

Just for an example. I've been trying at least once a day for the past week or so to connect with no luck. Then tonight, I tried again, no luck. But then it finally connected for a few minutes. But only a few minutes. I also noticed that a full week of data logs were missing when I downloaded the logs.

Dude...you didn't call Curt did you! :D

The IP address is unique to each piece of equipment within your network.

The subnet mask should be standard, as are the port settings. I wouldn't think you should have to mess with those.

The gaming adapter provides the wireless conduit between the controller and your network. It's allowing the controller to tap into the network to access your PC. (or really vice versa)

There is a web server built into the controller. I don't use it, and this may be part of your problem if it is enabled. If you are using AquaNotes you should not have it enabled. I would run AquaNotes as a service, and enable automatic polling.

Then you have to make sure Aquanotes has the correct IP for the controller, and that your network is configured to accept that IP.

As I said before, calling Curt is the best way to get you squared away. There are a lot of variables he can dial down quickly, and it is very difficult to trouble-shoot on the forums.

Update

Update

Well, there's not much to update. I am still having problems with the wireless gaming adapter communicating with the router. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'm just annoyed that I wasted 100 bucks on the &*($ thing.

I have been having problems with one of my IceCap660's. Its the new one. The 12 year old one is working great. It worked fine for a solid month and then the lights went out and it was letting off a burning smell. IceCap fixed it free of charge but it fried even worse a day or so after I reinstalled it. It is currently back at IceCap and I am trying to find the cause in the wiring somewhere. The corals don't seem to mind not having the extra light.

The parameters have settled in quite nicely. My alkalinity is actually probably a little low now. My PH is still a little lower than I would like as well but nothing is too far out of wack.

I was able to get a hold of a Barr Aquatic KR3021 Kalk Reactor: 8" tube, 24.5" high x 8.5" x 8.5", 4.0 gallon capacity (200-1000+ gallon systems). I am expecting this next week. I'm going to try to stabilize the PH, Alk, and CA with the Kalk Reactor alone and then start running the Calcium Reactor if I need to lower the PH and/or the Kalk reactor wont keep up with the CA demand.

I'm still trying to find time to install the new secondary sump.

Other than that, nothing much has been going on. I am noticing a very small amount of new growth on the corals but no coraline has showed up yet.

I was also going to ask if anyone runs magnesium in their Calcium Reactor? If so, which chamber do you run it in, how much, where do you get it and what kind, etc? Do you have any links with info about replacing magnesium through this method?

You know, that Icecap comment got me thinking. I had an Icecap ballast do the same to me. I found that the problem was caused by a wire nut connection where the wires corroded. The connection was sound to begin with but with time they corroded and created a partially open circuit. I wonder how often this happens with DIY ballasts. The only way I can think to rectify the problem would be to put a little silicone around the wires and the wire nut to keep air and humidity out.

I also had problems with an icecap ballast this year, it quit working and smelled burnt too. It blew the whole circuit board. Icecap repaired it, but when I got it back, it started shorting out again. This time I pulled the fuse out and it looked like it had been arcing at the fuse, when I reinstalled the fuse and just barely twisted it in, it worked fine. It has worked fine ever since...

where did you get the Barr kalk stirrer? I thought they had stopped production.

 I have connections!

 :p Ha Ha! Just kidding. Ive been cooresponding with Brent for a few months now on what to do with the reactors on this system. He has a few parts left over for certain models and will build to order, assuming he has the needed parts on hand. He has everything CNC milled. The only way to keep the cost down is to order enough parts for like 20 units at once. So, needless to say, he will not order parts for 20 reactors just to build one unit at this point.

I wanted the KR3021 but I didnt want to buy anything from Austin Oceans. Brent only has parts for a KR1020 which I felt was a little small for my system, but I decided to try it anyway. He was working on building me a 1020 when he found a LFS in Washington that still had a 3021. He was kind enough to pick that reactor up for me and ship it to me. Brent has been GREAT to work with every time I have ordered from him and I am VERY excited about this stirrer.

WDLV and octoboy - I am going to look at all the connections again. There are a couple of crimp connections where I had to extend the wires so that may very well be the problem. I used shrink wrap over them but that may not have worked very well. If I find that to be the problem, I'll go ahead and pop for the really nice crimp connectors at the boat store that have really nice shrink wrap already on the connectors.
