Renton's Upgrade

If it helps, I am using the latest version of Chrome on my laptop (Windows OS). I'll go check now to see if it works on my Iphone and Ipad.

OK, it doesnt work on my Ipad using IOS 7 and latest Chrome. Might be that Flash is needed?

It used to work with my crapple devices, now it doesn't. Worked on the PC. Guessing flash issue as well. Come on crapple, people still use flash, deal with it

Now that the tank has been running for about 1.5 years I have started to find the sweet spots for each measurement that seems to make most everything in my tank happy.

Here are my current readings:

Salinity: 1.026
Calcium: 455 (420 to 450 is my target zone)
Nitrates: 4 (this is as high as I want to let them get, I have found that my tank does better with Nitrates around 2ppm. Nitrates of 5ppm begins to cause problems in my tank)
Phosphates: 0.12, using Hanna Low Range Meter (I may actually let this climb closer to .2, I recently added a large amount of high capacity GFO that stripped a lot of phosphates, causing unhappiness and pale color in some acros, they are recovering nicely as I let phosphates slowly rise)
ALK: 9.4dKH (8.8 to 9.4 is my target zone)
Magnesium: 1350 (I have found levels closer to 1400 to 1450 seem to be best for my tank)

I will also add that I do 25% water changes (50 gallons) each week. In my opinion this is the single most important action I take in keeping my corals happy. If I start to slack, it does not take long to see the consequences.

A few pictures of a couple new corals and some random updated growth pictures:

This coral retracted just about all of it colored tissue when handled. It appeared to totally bleach out, it was very interesting. Here it is after the tissue started to come back out:

Amazing as always Nate. Colors look great minus your drop in phosphates. I think you need a frag tank plumbed to that tank so you can clear up your sand bed for more stuff lol

Many thanks for this post. It's very interesting that you run a much higher PO4 level than the prescribed 0.03ppm.

Your coral colours are looking evey good even though you say you had issues lately.

What is that blue sps at the top in the last photo next to the snail?

Nathan are those the new blastos and other goodies on the racks from our Cherry visit?

Same here..........Water changes are so under rated and such a simple task, yet everyone seems to want to find ways not to do them.

Thanks Brad. Trust me, I have tried to convince my wife to let me setup an inline frag tank, she is not bending on that subject.

Sahin, Big E stopped over this weekend, perhaps by him just being there the corals colored up a bit for me and I am now willing to accept a bit high PO4 numbers :)

The coral you are asking about is the original Purple Monster given to my by Dan aka Purplereef. I have done a good job disguising the Purple Monster as a blue monster

The Red and Gold "Sunrise" blasto is new from this weekends trip, as are the two frags on the left side of the rack (Darth Maul Favia and Likes to Party Leptastrea). The two frags on the right of the frag rack are from Cherry Corals acquired at the LEAR swap (some sort of mini-encrusting goni and the blue leptoseris/leptastrea type mix, not 100% what is it other then cool :) )

I recently did have a few issues with my tank, mainly a spike in my Nitrates. Entirely caused by me making irrational decisions.

After reading things on the internet, I started to apply techniques that seemed to be working for other people (without considering, or flat out ignoring that their systems were very different then mine).

I have a relatively high bio load and do 2 generous feeding a day (1 cube of PE mysis, some ova and some spirulina algae enriched brine) in the morning and pellets at night.

With a lot of people advocating "feed your corals" and add amino acids, I figured I had to do more. So I started feeding more oyster feast and started dosing amino acids.

Well, the results of doing that was a increase in nitrates up to about 12ppm and a daily development of forrest green slime algae on some of my rocks in the afternoon.

So, I stopped that and am now working my way back down to 2ppm nitrates through water changes. For my tank, most of that additional supplementation wasn't needed.

Nate its nice to hear your not the only one who has tried different things and that you share your down falls so we don't all feel like idiots....speaking of
I killed that birdsnest....again. this time it was water quality...I missed a water change :(
