Replacing a "lost" Clown

Well I have lost one of my paired clowns. They were residents of mine for right at 18 months and one was definatly larger than the other, however now that one has gone. I have no idea which one of the two remains.

I hate this loss as the two were never apart more than a few inches but had not laid any eggs yet.

My question is , should I replace the one that has passed on with another of near the same size, or a smaller one?

Also how readily will this "new" clown be accepted or will this be a challenge?

I just hate to keep a single clown and was hoping to see some breeding activity.

Any suggestions or experiences from some with past experience in this dilema would be appreciated.

Best bet is to get a small juvenile to introduce. Most clown species will readily accept the juvenile. Maroons, however, can be somewhat problematic and for that species it's best to provide the juvenile with someplace to escape that the larger Maroon can not fit.

Get a very small one. If the one you are left with is a male, he'll turn into a female and the new one will be the male. If you were to get a large one, you would run the chance of having 2 females.

Clownfishes can change from male to female but not the other way around. As far as acceptance, it usually goes pretty well. Good luck and sorry that you lost your clownfish.
