Returning to what I love - My new 180 Rimless

I'll bring my ziplock bags and fragging tools lol.

I would expect nothing less! LOL!

I've been saying this for almost 2 yrs ... I think.

Way to go Jon! How about a FTS?

Rob

Rob, you were just waiting for the tank to mature.... ;) remember, nothing good happens fast in this hobby! Even visits...

Thanks Bro. I'll take a snap tonight... not much changes.. I did add a drag of pink jade and also of sunset millie..

Another update on The AEFW fight... I've been watching various threads on the use of Bayer Home Defense with germ killer as a coral dip for over a year now with great success. I decided to try dipping the colony that I know is most effected, my tricolor valida.. Being a pretty large and encrusted colony, I took care not to expose any of the rock that the colony is attached to to the water in the dip... Within 20 seconds, I could not believe my eyes.. with the coral hanging upside down in the bucket I used to dip it, the AEFWs began raining out of the colony. I counted at least 60 of these little buggers... for 10 minutes or so they riggled until the wriggling stopped. After 15 minutes , I shook the coral in the solution and noticed the water take in a similar hue to the coral. My guess is that some of the xooxanthelae from the coral was released into the solution. Then, I rinsed it twice in saltwater from my water change in two separate buckets... There was a slight loss of color, but nothing significant... the coral hardly slimed at all once back in my tank and there was no visible signs of stress to any of the other inhabitants. The very next morning, the valida displayed better polyp extension than ever... what made me do this.... I had been noticing this colony getting light at the base... Upon basting, I would see two or three AEFWs come off and I knew there had to be more... This is the most striking colored piece in my reef amongst all the various "more expensive" corals and it is also one of my first corals introduced to this tank as a frag, which makes me particularly fond of it.

I in no way encourage others to try what I did, but once again, I offer my system as a lithmus test in finding some relief to this cause... Things have been very stable since the dip, I will update you all within a few weeks with a follow-up.

But first, a few pics as requested...

just finnished reading the whole thread, I really like you aquascape. nice and open but not too open and bare looking either.

Thank You :)

Sounds like you may be onto something Jon. Keep us posted on the tri-color results. Good luck my friend.

Hopefully Bro.. So far, so good! Dipped a few fresh cut frags too, but fortunately, they came up clean.. This stuff is proven to kill red bugs and AEFWs. It's also been noted to prevent reinfection for redbugs, which means that the coral may absorb some of this chemical..... That can be good or bad. But, like I stated, folks have been doing this for over a year now with no known adverse affects.. Personally, l feel it's very important to rinse after the dip and taking care not to submerge live rock.. I'm certain that this stuff would/could cause mass bacteria/micro fauna die-off. In some threads, I have read where hoobbyist have forgotten to rinse with no ill effects noted, but I would not advocate this.. Heck, I can't even advocate this practice until I see some long-term success myself. :eek1:

It's like with levamisole.. I think that there was definite benefits to the treatments, but I feel it was like robbing peter to pay paul. It definitely stunted the population of AEFWs in my system. After the initial treatment, I noticed polyp extension and growth on frags that I had seen no growth or poypls on for over a year... Some of those corals have already become colonies since my treatments.. However, the hit that my Bacterial system took was pretty massive and I lost non-Acropora, affected fish (not to death, but affected). My PO4 level spiked as a result of the levamisole and took some time to drop to acceptable levels.. Maybe the trick to successful Levamisole treatments are to heavily treat with probiotics throughout the treatments to counterbalance the negative effect on bacteria... This would be very similar to what we do to avoid staph infections when we're on heavy anti-biotics.... more to come I'm sure...

Hiya Jon.
Tanks looking beautiful. Healthy fish and healthy corals :)
Very interesting the topic on the Bayer dip. Thanks for sharing and being brave to try that.
Zeovit guys have come out with something to kill these pests. But more than a treatment I think it's something you have to fose regularly (read $$$$) to boost SPS immunity. I hope it's something that works and revolutionize our hobby. It's still new so guess we have to wait.

Geezz J, You had me read all 878 posts! I've spent many nights looking like this :wildone: and seeing like this :hmm6:!! LOL! However I'm glad I did because I got to find out some secrets to your wonderfull success. Well done bruh!
Yes everyone, I was the fortunate one whom got that lucky Red Planet piece J mentioned back at post 4 hundred and something!! :lolspin: I think.

You know J, your build has been really inspirational to many including myself and I will be incorporating some of your idea's into my current project now that my filtration room is done. So you better watch out now!! There's a new tank in town! :D

Thanks bruh... we'll be talking and great job. ;)

You guys really have to see this remarkable tank in person... It's breath taking!!

why you do that Noel now Im going to have to read the whole thing too, LoL...

J, the tank looks HardCore...

Thanks RN :) Let's see how it works out... It's been a few days and no TN and the coral is actually regaining it color as you can see already.. I really hope the zeovit guys are on to something... They may get me to buy a little blue bottle yet.:hmm3: LOL..

Absolutely gorgeous pics Jon, some of those colonies are getting huge.

Thanks Brett! Yeah Bro, they are growing.. They should hit another growth spurt starting next month.. I just picked up my new T5s from a local group buy.. With new bulbs installed, followed by the warmer water of the spring and summer is where my tank shows the most growth...

Thanks Dude! Now Get to reading Antonio! No cheating! LOL!!!

Freaken awesome Bruh!!

Thanks Doc!

Great tread. Im in the becoming stages of building my reef and I enjoyed seeing the start up to point you are at. This gives me lots of inspiration. Thanks

Thank's bret! Inspiration is crucial when it comes to success and longevity in this hobby. Please feel free to PM questions you have on your reef.. I would be happy to help along the way..

hey buddy,

tank looks amazing even with AEWF:))) Bayer works hah:))

how much vinegar do you dose this days and what ur PO4?

Hey Mike! Thanks Man! I haven't tested my phosphates in a while. I will have to get back to you with a reading. Currently, I'm dosing 120ml of vinegar daily.

I just wanted to say BRAVO ! What an amazing tank :eek2: Could you post pictures of how you have your air pump/air dryer/ ozone unit/ into your skimmer setup ?
Thanks,
Steve
