Rob's 300 Gallon Deep Dimensions!

This tank looks awesome! Not empty at all! I really like it. It looks really mature for a tank that just got setup. Because that brute container is round it loses allot of space compared to a square container. You can easily get something made from acrylic or get a standard 20 gallon tall and have tons of left over space under there. I think I read that you RODI automatically tops off your reservoir anyway which means you can get away with a 10 gallon tank. Just my 2 cents.

Yes I thought about just using a 10 gallon brute, but my tank evaporates at least 3 gallons a day and the reservoir would only last a several days. My spout to my rodi unit is not always on. So this brute is a lot more convenient and will last up to a week, before fill up. I still have a bit of room in the stand for a calc reactor if I choose to do so, if I ever ditch the dosers.

If you want you can get a solenoid valve from your water supply to a float switch or timer and you'll never have to touch or fill that sucker up. You can have your controller have it open the valve when the water gets too low and close when it's full. Keeping up with manual filling on a 300g is really hard!

Is there a write up on that, I'm interested in hooking it up to my rodi unit.

nice log! and glad to hear on the recovery of the n law!

was wondering if u had a mini cycle or if you added anything?

Thank You! Father in-Law is doing great and recovering.

Had a little mini cycle, but was not bad at all. Once I fired up the reactors and Skimmer the little algae I had, has dicipated and water is crystal clear. Aside from the emergency, I already had the water mixed in with my cycled water from my 175g in the 300 gallon stock tank along with all my live rock and livestock, which was filtered through my Fluval 406 packed with carbon., so it was ready to go

Ok here goes.

You plumb your RODI unit to your water line (not through the actual faucet) use on of these.

http://buckeyefieldsupply.com/showproducts.asp?Category=187&Sub=133

After that connection you use a solenoid valve. A solenoid is a valve that opens and closes electronically. The one used for this application remains closed at all times unless it gets power. Once it gets energized it opens.

http://buckeyefieldsupply.com/showproducts.asp?Sub=508&showspecials=508

So you have your water line which is plumbed directly to your RODI with a solenoid valve on the line between the water line and RODI unit. You plug in the solenoid valve, it gets energized and water flows to the RODI unit.

Now you get a bin for top off water and install one of these.

http://buckeyefieldsupply.com/showproducts.asp?Sub=518&showspecials=518

You plug the high low switch into an electrical outlet and the solenoid into the high low switch. The high low switch works as follows. You set the low switch somewhere near the bottom of your bin and the high switch somewhere near the top where you want the water to stop. When the water level gets to the bottom switch it will energize the solenoid valve and water will start filling the bin. Once it gets to the high switch it will turn off.

It's always a good idea to use a mechanical float valve as well in your top off bin as a safety precaution because float switches and solenoids can fail from time to time. FYI you don't have to use the high low switch that Buckeye sells if you have an apex controller you can get a break out box and 2 float switches and program it to do the same thing. It's also a good idea to put an auto shut off valve on your RODI unit. In case the float switch fails the mechanical valve will stop water from entering the top off bin and prevent a flood but the waste water will keep running and that's a waste of waste water :). You can also get one of these to have the waster water go directly to your waste line.

Since it automatically fills up every time it gets low you don't really need a large storage bin anymore. A 10 gallon tank will be more then enough. It will just get filled up more frequently. That being said making larger quantities of water at is usually better for the membrane and produces better water, but space is something to always consider.

You're awesome, thank you so much!!!

ahh ok so it was sorta like a big water change! lol

im going from a 40 to 270 so yeh...dunno how im gonna do that. lol

Just be prepared, when I did water changes a week prior, I save my old water in 2 50 gallon brutes and kept them well aerated with pumps and when I transferred everything to the stock tank, I mixed all the water in there. So I had about 250 gallons of water. So when I transferred everything into the 300, I only had to make another 100G of ready water to compensate for the sump.

Little update and pics of my new additions.

awesome vid, and very relaxing
I noticed you have fairly large grain size sand , almost pebbles, how do you like this substrate? does it trap much detritus, or is it easier to achieve higher flow rate without sandstorms?

Well my intentions was go bb, but changed my mind. So I bought 50lbs of caribsea Florida crushed coral , and also used about 50lbs of my old sand. didn't realized when I picked up the bags the grains was so big. Well I used it anyway, if you go back a few pages I had to set the tank up since my livestock has been in a 300G stock tank for over a week. I'm pretty satisfied, like you said its easier to achieve higher flow rate without the sandstorms. and my corals, especially my chalices on the bed does not get any sand on them. So right now, its so far so good :)

Brought my Gold Flake Angel home :) Hope he thrives in my tank.
