Rod's Onyx Clownfish

What is the going rate for Rod's Onyx Clown? I have seen some other breeders are selling the onyx clown for 125. I thought that was way too high. I also heard that Rod lost his female onyx last week, therefore it will not be easy to get his onyx clown in the future.

I don't think you'll find Rod's Onyx, unless you can find someone willing to part with theirs. Sustainable Aquatics is breeding the C-Quest line of Onyx. (same thing as Rod's) You could check with your LFS to see if they'll order you a pair. I don't think $125 is to much for a good pair though.

Facebook: Rod's Clownfish

Friend them on facebook, and then message them about how many you want to buy.

As far as i know, that and email is the only way you can get them now.

It is 125 per onyx clown.

looks like my laying Rods Onyx pair has just went up in their worth. hehe
only thing bad about breeding onyx, is that you have to wait almost a year for them to darken up.

$250 for a pair of onyx??????? That's crazy.:wildone: I'd definitely look somewhere else.

Agreed. Onyx clowns are not rare, nor are they color/pattern morphs per se (like a Picasso). Recently I've seen a lot of wild caught Solomon Island percs with nice colors and patterns, and most I would consider Onyx.

However, one of the reasons I went with Rod's is because there is an underlying "pedigree" so I knew what I was getting (I wanted the black dorsal).

i bought a pair from rod a few months ago. Prices were 40 each + shipping.

That's much more reasonable.

We don't have to go through Rod to get this line of clowns. C-Quest is the one that developed the Rod's Onyx clowns. Now we can get this same line of clowns from many sources, like Sustainable Aquatics. I don't know what the price differences are between Rod's, and the other suppliers though??????

Where can you get them though? I've been looking for a pair myself for a while for a decent price.

I got mine from AlphaCorals.com. They have wysiwyg vids of all the fish, which is a really nice way to shop online. Mines become even darker since I bought her; both her dorsal fins are black now (C-Quest line)

Ibluewater.com. Has onyx. Here is pic of mine. Not a bad price either, I've owned rods as well, I think Ibluewater have more color and consistency of full bars.

Here is a pic

If you want a pair of Rods clowns (versus the other Onyx mentioned) I think your best bet is to order directly (see my PM). If you're lucky you'll be able to have Alex select a pair based on your criteria.

The other option is to ask your LFS to order them for you. They will most likely order a lot of a dozen or so. The price will probably be better than when ordering direct, but you will most get a younger pair so the markings won't be as apparent.

i do agree that 125 for a onyx is a rip. maybe a pair. or a very large almost completely black female.
i seen many Onyx from Ibluewater and they have gotten in many nice WC onyx in. even some with nice patterns. he had a buch of onyx that came in that the females were over 4" my female is barely over 3" i would guess.

For the prices on IBW, I would rather be getting a tank raised then a WC, IMO.

I believe that most breeders would rather have a WC to introduce new genes into their bloodline. In general I don't think IBW is geared towards the average hobbyist.
