S. gigantea on the move

it's not unusual for anemones to go for a walk but IME/IMO it's rare for a healthy happy gigantea to take a stroll....

which leads me to believe it wasn't happy.... and it wasn't.

I have my controller set to turn off (heat producing) halides when the water goes above 84F and that's what happened yesterday. My gigantea LOVES light... so once the halides turned off it went for a gander looking for some. It sensed a rock stack next to it's perch and bridged the rock gap so it's now on another coral bommie.
If you know much about anemones, gigantea behaves very much like a magnifica in this rock perch/pedestal thing. Both species LOVE as much light as possible and they'll take a walk to get more. They'll even climb a side of aquarium glass!

I'm going to try and minimalize collateral damage. Not my idea of fun. Maybe it's a good thing I'm going nowhere this holiday.

this anemone has never moved on it's own since I got it over 5 years ago.

I've never really experienced any seasonal disturbances. I think this is a good example of how dependent this species is on light. Ditto with mags.

she's tucked herself under the orange cap right now

I had to move my Acan ASAP. Looks like some purple cap sustained damage overnight.

Does she look like she's satisfied with this spot? I wonder what the Clowns are thinking. "Damn, my house keeps moving!"

you're right, Eileen. Clowns will stick with the anemone wherever it goes. There's not much they can do about it but frantically survey the situation.
This anemone species DEMANDS intense lighting and it's EXTREMELY sticky.
My best guess is that it will kill off that orange cap entirely before climbing on top of it. This would give it a PREEMO spot aprox. 20" almost directly below a 400w halide bulb.
I fear this anemone getting too large. I was trying to control it's positioning and (thus) size. If it kills the cap and moves up there I'll have to frag surrounding corals.
One thing is for sure... even after 18 years reef aquariums aren't boring.

My rtba has been wandering for the last 24 hrs....woke up this morning thinking my dam emeralds ate the poor thing...but it was sitting on top of the highest rock in the tank......lol, wheres waldo?

yes.

It will be interesting to see if it's intent is to kill that Montipora in order to move on top of it.

That would be a nice spot for it! You can grow another red cap.
I always wondered how long your nem would stay on that relativly smallish rock.

Are the tentacles always shorter now that it is getting more light?
