S. Haddoni ate my puffer!

My juvenile stars and stripes puffer (2") got snatched up by my haddoni. That is the only rational explanation I can come up with. In the past I had to be cautious when feeding the nem. I would always feed the puffer first but for some reason as soon as the nem got some food my little puffer wanted to take the food away. I was watching my tank yesterday and everything was fine. Left and came back a half hour later and could not find him. He could not have jumped out due to the screen mesh covering the tank. My wife and I looked for him for nearly an hour in rocks, little nooks etc... Woke up this morning and went to look again but still could not find him. I had read previous threads about this but was hoping the puffer would learn. Sucks, I really liked Ted.

Not sure if I am going to replace him yet. Don't want to wait the whole QT period just to have another chomped on.
 
Lol no fish are safe with carpets, when purchasing one most people build the tank around the carpet. Sorry you lost Ted!
 
Even after reading the other threads I felt 110g would be enough room for everyone to coexist without incident. The nem is completely out of the way, hanging out in the corner buried in the substrate in front of a powerhead.
 
I have a large 12" Red Haddoni in a 180. He has a mated pair of Cinnamon clowns in it.

Once I add a new 265g to the mix I am going to move the Ritteri to the new tank and leave my 180 just for the Haddoni and the two Cinnamons.

my 2 inch Haddoni ate 3 fish and a cleaner shrimp... :crazy1: within 1 week
 
What I theorized is indeed what happened. While hanging out watching my tank my nem starting spitting out what was left of Ted. Picked out the bits he spit out to prevent a nitrate spike and moved on. Time to think about a new fish to get into the QT. Thinking about getting a six line wrasse. Doesn't have the same personality as a puffer but they are good looking fish.
 
Haddoni are known fish eaters. Conversely, in 20 years keeping Mags, only a single fish casualty (and that was a sick damsel that swam right in).
 
What kind of clowns do you have hosting the nem. Some are better than others at keeping fish away. That being said haddonis are one of the worst for eating your livestock. My haddoni has eaten well over $500 in livestock over the years. He ate a friggin 6in. sea hare and spit out a little nubbin of leftover hare. Never lost anything to my btas
 
I lost two snails today to my Haddoni. I keep my fish count low (only 3 fish including a clown) to avoid traffic and eventually inside the anemone's mouth.
 
I placed my agressive african flameback angel fish from the sump back in display and it was so stupid that it swim right in the haddoni. Luckily I was fast enough to free it from the haddoni. The fish is injured from the sting, but it's swimming happy around now. Hope it will heal and survive the sting. The haddoni was so sticky that I need very hard to pull the fish out. Then I gave some scallop to the haddoni , because it couldn't eat the fish and was done with eating in less then 10 second .

man good luck... I saved my jawfish the same way. But he didn't make it after 2 days.. looked perfectly fine after too.

Really? He seems so fine now. Hope it will not die on me, it's in my tank for more then a year now.:sad2:
 
I've got my haddoni in a 125 6ft long and it manages to munch anything and everything. Managed to munch down a blood shrimp, two clowns and a foxface. I wished every day that my Ebli Angel would push it's stupid luck to far, it's always picking at the nems center or atleast it tries to and every other coral but NOPE, so I removed his bullying backside myself. Wouldn't go into the nem but he made a beline for the ol inverted pop bottle in a hurry. Something sickly satisfying about putting a fish you despise into solitary, JERK.
