Sal's 100G Rimless Build

You know you want them and I would say KEEP'EM. LOL! OR.....you can always upgrade later! LOL!! Or find someone with a nice big tank (like mine) and let me hold them! LOL!! J/K
You'll do fine... you can always invest in a UV Sterilizer and add it to your system instead of using a qt (Pro's/Con's and will not debate it here). However we both know that a qt is your best option... GL. FYI i use a UV...

Wow that's gonna be a lot of bioload in ur 100. U feed the Anthias 2x a day? Tangs are also messy and poop a lot lol. The good thing is each tang is from a different genus and if they are the last to go into the tank there shouldn't be much aggression. I'm actually going slow on my fish additions... Just every week or so depending on how the fish/tank adjusts with my tang the last edition (white tail bristle tooth tang that I have a LA alert on).

I have been reading up on UV's but im not sold yet and dont wanna add another piece of equipment if i can avoid it. If the time comes and i need a holding tank ur the first ill call buddy

I feed small amounts 3 or 4 times a day.....almost all he food gets consumed......not worried about the bio load ive been pretty good about water changes and what not. i wanted to go slow but im my own worse enemy sometimes.

Go for it!

Thanks doc....if u say its a go then its a go....lol !

thanks guys im gunna let the order ride and hope they still have everything when they ship on friday night...ill post some pics after sat

Its been a while since i updated.....got my water parameters somewhat stable.
alk @ 8-9
calc @ 460
mag @ 1350 -1450
salinity 1.026
temp 78 - 79
i just started dosing kalk using a K1 avast marine kalk stirrer fed through my tunze ato. so far so good. ph swings from 8.15 at night and @ 8.25 or so at peak. I might use a toms aqualifter programmed on the apex to dose kalk only at night to try and keep the ph a bit more stable. I dont like the idea of the ato and evap rates dictating how much kalk goes in......it changes from day to day so better to have tighter control i think.
anyways here are some pics

i have gotten into a routine with water testing, but i have to say i feel like its all guess work.
i use the Elos- mag/cal/alk test
redsea - mag/cal/alk
salifet- mag/ nitrate
hanna - phos/calc/alk
i try and do all test across the board and see how they compare. and every test has different results. not only between tests but also if i retest. sometimes it works out and i get duplicate answers but for the most part im averaging out sometimes 3 diff results form the same test to try and come up with a #. its a PIA to test, i checked all expiration dates testing procedures etc but some test just suck arse. im talking to you hanna calc.....red sea mag......!
am i being to anal? should i just do one round of tests per kit and compare results that way? i cant imagine having to go threw around 30 test total every time i test just to get a somewhat accurate # (10 diff tests 3xs each to make sure its somewhat consistent)

oh and just a side note......if you decide like i did to clean all vials and syringes in some white vinegar make sure you only leave them i for an hour or so after a while the vinegar will wash away the ml fill line and youll b left with a very clean unmarked vial

The tank is looking good... I like the rockwork also.

For Testing I use the Hanna Checkers (all 3), Red Sea for Mag/Cal/Alk, and API for Nitrates.
For the tests that overlap I test each once and average, those that dont (PO4) I use twice and average aslong as they come out around eachother... if one is really off I test a 3rd time and average the two closest ones... different kits test at different levels, throw in human error and you got a lot of tests that could be done. Stick with the 2 you think are the most accurate for each variable and keep a log to see how your readings are in the long run.

Hey Sal... I understand what you are saying about testing.. I also retest my params to be certain. I find that the Salifert Nitrate and Red Sea Nitrate test kits are within normal rage with-in 5ppm +/- of each other when I am skeptical about a test result. In the end I choose to use the Salifert.

Same also applies to the Salifert dKH (Alk) test kit and the Hanna. Both are really good and give almost the exact same numbers give or take +/- 1ppm. I do the Salifert 1st and reassure myself with the Hanna. I use the ppm conversion to dkh to get the results.

For Ca++ numbers, I prefer the Salifer over the Hanna... unless i'm too stupid to understand why the Hanna numbers are almost 100ppm higher than salifert or it could be I'm doing something wrong? I dunno.. LOL!! So I trust in the Salifert.

For Po4 I use the Hanna and Red Sea and I find that the Red Sea is ok if all tests were color comparisons.... but in comparing for number displays it is off +/-5ppm. So to get my actual readings I use Hanna and I always retest twice using new regents and always get two different readings. I like Matty-O, use the median number. So if one test reads 0.02 and the second test reads 0.04 my final average would be 0.03.
I also usually tend to stick with what is more accurate for the test as Matty-O mentioned and keep logs of all testing, w/c's and equipment changes with dates in a notebook. You'll be ok! GL and stop worrying! Your tank looks GREAT!

hahaha i know i get all worked up for no reason. Ok good so you guys do what i do basically and average out the results.

The hanna calc test is most finicky thing ever! theres a thread on it with suggested testing methods and alternate methods etc. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2050181
way complicated and annoying...using only distilled water to clean the vials having to be spot on with the 1ml sample or else it gets thrown off...i feel like you need a doctorate in chemistry and a sterilized lab to get the thing to work.

good point on keeping a log book....right now i have an old notebook i scribble test results into with dates but its all over the place. I will start a new cleaner organized log and try and get an excel worksheet going to track trends.

I was also thinking about trying to test at around the same time each time. for example i usually do my weekly 10% WC on sat mornings so maybe every sat at say 11am. do you think time of the day would have an effect? cant hurt right?

HAHAHAHAHAA... we are not alone and I'm sure that hundreds of people say and do the same thing also! LOL! Yes it is a headace with Ca++. A notebook is alot faster and easier hardpaper copy just in case a virus wipes out your pc.

I usually test the night before or right before my w/c's... and 24hours after my w/c. Having the calcium reactor was a big plus..... it always has my param's in check for Ca++ & Alk and I don't need to worry about the time of day because both are introduced at the same time.
Also a wise choice in making your Apex turn on the Aqualifter to dose Kalk to keep your ph up (I used baked baking soda to raise my ph and alk for adjustment purposes without having to worry about raising my Ca++). Your on track bro!!

update coming soon (hopefully this weekend) have a bunch of pics i need to load up and few new pieces of equipment :)
been crazy busy with work....my little brother just got married this weekend and i have 3 months left till i tie the knot so free time has turned into wedding planning mania...so much fun..... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! every time i make a payment towards a wedding vendor i associate it with what i could've bought thats reef related....lol.... stupid wedding!

Got a few pics off last night with the iphone so excuse the quality...I tried fixing in photoshop but prob did more harm than good but anyways......
