Heyy again,

I have another question about salt

I have read on other forums the mix ratio for instant ocean salt being 1.5 cups for every gallon for a SG of 1.023.

But my question is... 'What measurement classes as a cup?'

Its just that cups come in all shapes and sizes, which gives everybody a different mix ratio...

I was just wondering if there is a more accurate way of mixing the salt, or if any of you guys mix it differently using your own method.

By the way, i have a 60 litre nano system, and i need to strip it all down and give it a hearty maintenence.

You should using a measuring cup like is used in cooking, not a drinking cup if that is what you are thinking of. They come in sets that have 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 and 1 cup sizes typically.

It will definatly save me cracking out the scales and measuring 35g each time i want 12 litres of water!

1 US cup = 236 ml
1 Metric cup = 250 ml

I had to look back at your post and notice where you're from. Yeah, the cup is one of those old imperial units that we still use in the states.

I thought that, as we dont use the measurement of 'cups' here, like it does on american marine websites.

I did find out that 1 cup = 48 teaspoons / 16 tablespoons

I use a plastic cup from a small chineese take out of soup.
Slightly over the top comes VERY close.

i have 1/2 cup and 1 cup measuring cups for cooking, i use dd-h2ocean salt or red sea coral pro salt, both require 1/2 cup per gallon.

I use instant ocean and 1/2 cup per gallon comes pretty close to 1.023 for me. I may have to add an extra cup after I check the salinity the first time.

Keep in mind that IO doesn't mix to 1.025 using the directions. That's why a 200 gallon bucket only makes 160 gallons.

Or you could just make it simple.


Fill a 5g bucket and add 2 3/4 cups of instant ocean
and you will get 1.025 SG always.

And I use one full bag of IO plus 2 x 12oz Jif jars full to the top for my barrel. 1.025 every time.

I use io for weekly 30 gallon WC fill brute to my 30 gallon mark found by adding 30 1gallon milk jugs then 13 cups for 1.026 sg. I mix about 5 cups every ten min. used a bucket of marine tropic reef salt to cycle a smaller tank and it actually had a 1 and 1/4 cup in the bucket so I saved that for my salt measuring

I think the universe may implode if we Americans took to the metric system!!! Multiples of 10 must be avoided at all costs!!!!

Using a scale is the most accurate, but no matter what, always double check with a refractometer, just in case.

Ratreef: metric would make so much sense. Food for thought, there are only three countries in the world, that do not use the metric system. LOL
