I'm designing my station right now. I'll have an elevated RO/DI 37g container that does the slow fill. Then, I'll empty by gravity into either a FSW mixing container or Kalk mixing container. Both will be directly under the RODI container. I'm planning to use a powerhead inside the FSW mixing container instead of the external pump and plumbing like I've seen a lot of.

Question: for those who use JUST a powerhead dropped inside... do you find the mixing is enough over the course of a day or two? Or do you wish that you went with the external pump and water moving via plumbing? Seems the former is much simpler. The latter more expensive and points of possible failure.

Here's mine (only mocked up in this photo, still some mods to make to it but this is the basic setup)

That looks great! I live two miles from the ocean, but where I am at it looks more like a swamp, so I will stick to the rodi.

I have a small pump to move the RO/DI water from one barrel to the other for mixing, but I use an old power head to do the mixing, it says on all the time unless the barrel is empty. It does not say empty for more than a few minutes before I refill it. I can use the external pump of I wanted to for mixing, but the power head is more than enough.

what size are the buckets? I have a local guy selling 30 gallon units with a similar locking ring. Do you prefer these to the bruutes?

thanks

I have been inspired by/jealous of some of the setups in this thread for quite some time.
I finally got mine up and running a few months ago when I had this cabinet/hood unit built around my tank. I am thrilled to be done with hauling buckets of water all over the place to do water changes. 2 - 20 gallon plastic containers, RODI water on top, gravity fed with flex tubing as needed into bottom SW container. Larger flex tubing fed by pump in SW container reaches reef tank on the right to refill after draining.

dekand What are the black containers W/the 3) 3/4" lines coming out the bottom & are they controled by the two boxes to the right of them

Thought I would show mine.
I am limited on floor space in my soon to be fishroom , so I took the stacking route. Gravity feed. No pumps involved.
The room will have a 10 ceiling height.
The ATO storage tank for the DT will sit at floor level. All I need to do to top it off is turn a ball valve.
The return section of the sump will also set at ground level and have a drain line plumbed into the bottom part of the tank. For a WC, I will be able to drain the old out and let the fresh SW in the the turning of a couple of ball valves, without shutting down the system.

The pumbing coming out is an overflow on the freshwater barrel, I sometimes forget to turn off the water. The clear tubing runs thru the wall to the back yard

This is temp for now. I will mod it when the new tank system comes on line

This holds the circ. rig in place at the top

circ. rig sets on the water out plumbing at the bottom of the barrel

Hope this will give another reefer and idea!!!
I know I have gotten many from this site.

Where is everyone getting their tanks? Plastic mart is not free shipping, they want $80 freight for two 25 gallon tanks. I tried to buy locally, we have a tank depot, but they lied to me about what they have in stock and hiked the price up 150% to include freight, despite me picking them up. I'm looking for somewhere with free or reasonable shipping.
