Salt Water Mixing Stations Let's See Them

is it possible that brown slime is rust from my Mag9.5 mixing/transfer pump?

I mix Reef Crystals in a 5 gal bucket. If I allow it to circulate for more than 2 days before using it, I start to get brown slime. I think it is due to a biological component in RC, but I am not sure about that.

Maybe 3 times a year I throw a bucket in here and mix it.

The other 2 times, I lower a bucket over the side, get some water and throw it into my tank.

Here is mine. It's a little complicated but it works.

Hey guys... I am just about to have the time to start building my mixing station finally after years of lugging buckets...

It will be a dual Brute stack...following most of the setups I've seen...but I will have about a 7 feet rise and about 12-15 feet across. I am looking for a cost effective pump that is decent quality...

Thoughts everyone?

Alright, so I just finished building a mixing station and I've been thumbing through this thread but ice yet to find an answer to what I'm curious about. How will temperature effect the salinity? I live near Houston and the summers are brutal. I already have plans of keeping a couple of frozen 1 gallon jugs of water to float in any water I plan on putting in my tank. However, how will the temperature effect the salinity while I'm trying to dial it in while in the storage tank? Also, how often should I circulate the water in the storage containers? All the time? Thanks in advance.

Temperature will not affect the true salinity of water. However, the density of water will change with temperature. And, since salinity is usually measured via a hydrometer or refractometer, this will impact the reading. Most measurement tools are calibrated at 75 deg or so.

So basically, I need to bring the temperature to 75 degrees before I measure salinity, right? Also, what about the circulation? I don't need it moving all the time, do I?

check the directions for your specific salt mix. I use Red Sea Coral Pro and used to get horrible residue inside the mixing tank which I needed to clean out every 2 months or so. Then I found out that you are only supposed to mix the salt for 2-3 max or you'll get precipitation. Once I started following the directions the tanks stay clean without issue
