Saltwater guppies

Update: Day 13
Been going real slow on my drip to not shock the pike as i cant find any info on anyone ever having acclimated one, let alone for a reef tank :). the group is doing great and is at 1.020 and climbing, just a few short days left before they meet the tomato clown!

Glad to hear your fishes are doing great josh and marvin. let us know long term how they go and if they successfully start breeding in your tanks

Great to hear that its going well, can we get a few pics of the fish? I would love to see some.

Just a quick update from my end.

My female has given birth! Id say that there are at least 20 fry all swimming happily. And the female is still huge. Pics to come as soon as I can get my camera.

I tried mollies. After a month-long quarantine/acclimation (I know, it was more than long enough), the female was the only one who lasted long enough to see the DT. The male had died a few days after I got him. Both had stringy white poop, treated with prazi, but I guess he was too sick when I got him. The clowns and Blenny didn't charge at the female, at least not when I was watching, but on the third morning she was dead.

I think I'd like to try it again, though. My daughter has about half a dozen mollies in her DT.

Here are a couple photos. Knowing me personally, 8 fry have inevitably died already. Im not sure of the cause. The salt water, bad genetics, water quality, stress etc. could be the cause as far as im aware. After looking at the fry for alittle longer, it seems that they were born with very tiny/no yolks. Aren't guppies supposed to have a yolk?

Here is a picture of a single fry:

Here is an image of a fry literally less than 10 seconds old, I witnessed the birth.

The mother has also been moved to the DT. Since introducing her, all the guppies have perked up!

They may have been born prematurely from the stress of acclamation to full salt water? Maybe the next set of fry well fare better.

Thats cool you got to see them hatch first hand josh! nice pic too. Here's some pics of my fish, it's super hard getting a clear shot idk why. They're real close to going into my twenty, I'll have much clearer shots then. If you look closely all 4 fish are in the second pic lol

Look like those fish will be an interesting addition to a Dt!

The new head count for the fry today is 14 strong. I'd be happy to see 5 make it to February.

Something fishy is going on in the DT. The male guppy and the mother guppy have disappeared? I cannot see any trace of them anywhere. The female in the overflow is still in there, I can't get in to reach her....

Also, 2 turbo snails have died in 4 days.

As it stands, I have 2 female guppies and 14 fry.

Moved my fish to the display. Somehow the made it out of the little breeder box I had them in. We'll see if they made it when I get home.

No sign of the little guys last night. I think They were eaten. I'm going to have to catch some more out of my pond and try again.

Livebearer's typically don't give birth until the fry have completely absorbed the yolk. So that looks normal. However, having no yolk they need to start feeding right away.

Nivram: it seems like these guys are pretty good at their disappearing acts...

Yeah, I have fed since birth and they can be seen eating. It's cool as you can see the food in their tiny stomachs just after eating. I have been feeding them some pellet food shaken up in water to break them up.

I set a trap in my pond today to see if I can get more Gambusia. This time ill put them in the qt tank.

One issue I am noticing quickly, these fish tend to hang out on the surface. Should I be looking at a different species? Something more midwater?

Rps: C'mon man. Join the club lol

Yeah for me they also seem to stay more at the top. However, as time goes on, they are defiantly roaming more mid/bottom. in fact, my female is hardly ever seen at the top anymore. I would bet that flow deters them from sticking around the rock structures.

Very interesting thread. So they are good algae eater and feed corals. How many would you guys suggest getting for my 60 gallon tank?

If you guys want mosquito fish and guppies just take a coke bottle trap with some bread to ANY healthy water way and you'll have more fish than you know what to do with!
