What  Patience? Whats that? C'mon Sara, Can you at least add one fish for us :p

Send me your "Joc-u-lat-or" and I'll add him as the test!

I just need to do a few more things like add more rock first, then add the rest of the sandbed and maybe have someone over to plug in my skimmer for me ... then I can add a fish. I have a 6" male Blonde Naso Tang that would LOVE to get out of my 70 gallon rubbermaid sump! Don't let the Tang Police see that as it's only been a temporary home for a couple of months.

The original exit was a 1-in. pipe--2 in. of input and 1 in. of exit capacity is not a good combination. With the extra exit pipe, a wad of rogue chaeto can't cause an overflow.

Now there's a mental image: A wad of rogue chaeto. Would make a great horror film.

Don't temp me :) But if I did that, it might stunt my daughters intellectual progress. Yes, I am am so sick that I am using my tank as an educational tool. If I was home schooling her, does that mean that I could write it off? Hmmm, thats something to think aboout :p

We went to steinhart aquarium in November and while all the other kids were saying "nemo, nemo", Emma was saying "ocellaris, ocellaris" :lol2:

This is not the final resting place as I'm hoping to get a rock stacking expert from the area over sometime in the next week to help build a couple of structures.

You sure have a lot of experts running in and out  Will your husband eventually be the algae scrubbing expert down the road?

 Jon was just telling someone over the Holiday's that there's a stream of guys coming in and out of the basement all the time. He said I just tell them she's in the basement and send them on down. It's a good thing he's not the jealous type at all!

No, Jon just likes to look at the pretty fish and corals and does not touch the tanks. The algae will be all mine.

Congrats on the progress so far! I can't wait to see the final product.

Thanks sugartooth! I hope to have this wrapped up soon!

You have a nice build going here. I do have a request that has stirred some interest. Will you be willing to snap some images of the surge tanks + plumbing? I have seen what you have posted but still am uncertain of the operation

I am curious as to how this will work. I look forward to your next images

Thanks EBOLII :)

Surges ... my favorite items today! I've just spent the last couple of hours tinkering with them both of them with adjusting the chain length to get the "perfect fire", etc.

Here's one filling up:

Here it is firing with the flapper now open:

Here it one looking up at it. The white spaflex on the right feeds the surges from a tee off the return. The center clear hose is my emergency drain in case the surge does not fire and the water can not fully escape down the small stand pipe on the plumbing assembly of the surge (the tall white pipe above the flapper) and the white spaflex on the right is the line the surge water exits the surge tank to the display.

Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

You should shoot a video of the surge both of the surge tank and in the display. I thought about it for my tank but just didn't have to room to install one.

It does help thank you. How much surge flow do you get in the tank and what is the timing per flush? Are you losing 5-6" due to the piping on the bottom of the 30gal? or is this loss minimum?

This is one of the better surges I have seen......well done

Sorry, I don't believe any of our cameras have the ability to do video recordings at all. I'll have to check around and see if any friends can record it.

EBOLII - I'll have to take some measurements and time one of the surges and post it later tonight.

I don't have a point-and-shoot, so I'll have to check with some friends.

Here's some more details on the surge. They are built with Aqueon 20G Highs which are 24x12x18. The one I timed surges every 2.5 minutes. When the flapper opens, it drains for a full 65 seconds before the flapper closes back up and refills. The tank actually only drains down a little over half way before the flapper closes. Also keep in mind that the tank is still filling with water as it is draining as well. Hope that helps more EBOLII.

I also planned on having 3 surges, but I was worried about too many microbubbles so I cut one out of the final plumbing design and used that hole in the tank for a return instead.
