SaraB's 268 Gallon Build¦ Try #3!

thanks for the updated info I do get the theory. I don't see why 3 surge tanks would be any better than 2. Are the surge outlets on the ends of the primary tank? i was thinking that a Penductor at the end of the surge line in place of a nozzle would be the optimal setup. Do you have any thought on that? I don't have a system up and running to get a good feel on the operation. Why I am asking..

Sara,
Do you have both the surges firing at the same time? If so, how are the microbubbles? Got any links to how you set your surges up? I'd like to try that with my next tank.

We went to steinhart aquarium in November and while all the other kids were saying "nemo, nemo", Emma was saying "ocellaris, ocellaris" :lol2:

That is too funny. When we were doing our deep dive for our PADI advanced cert, the instructor asked us to write things with an underwater pen to test how we were doing with nitrogen narcosis. He pointed to a clown, and wrote "Nemo", then asked us to do the same. I crossed out Nemo and wrote "A. Oscellaris" :)

Sara, btw, I really love the surges...given the space, I really think this form of flow is tough to beat.

How much noise are you get from the surge?

There shouldn't be hardly any noise if any at all, b/c her surges are in her fish room.

If they were not in the fish room, there are usually a burp or 2 at the beginning and end when the surges fire/stop.

Sorry for the late responses ... I've been stuck up in Toronto for work since Tuesday.

I do hear some of the blurping right now since the canopy has not yet been put on the tank to buffer some of that noise. That's pretty much all I hear are a few blurps.

I have valves set up to control the amount of flow to each of the surges. I have not yet tried to see if I can dial the flow to have them fire separately or even watch over a course or a day to see if that would continue to be the case once I try and adjust them. I can try that when I get back home this weekend. When I left, they were firing at the same time, so I'll se if that is still the case.

The microbubbles are only at the beginning when the water starts to flow into the display. It does not seem too bad at the moment.

I don't have links for the set-up as I had my friend Rod build them. I know there are 2 designs ... the Calfo and Borneman and I can't recall which I have. I'll check and post that later!

Very nice surg tanks!

Definitly a great way to move water in a large tank.

Nice job!

Thanks Bax! It would be nice if I didn't have to add my Tunze's to clutter the view, but I'll have to wait and see how the flow is once I get the rock and coral in.

Thanks for the kind words macreefster!

Hmm, you are a landscape designer I see ... come on over for your reef fix this weekend! :D

You have a Borneman surge and a Calfo style overflow. :)

Borneman put the surge in his book "Aquarium Corals." You may find some other examples over in the DIY forum.

Actually the 2 main designs are Carlson (Not Calfo), and Borneman. ( IIRC ,to give proper credit, Mr Borneman had some help with the design from Carl Del.. the rest of the name has slipped my mind. Sorry Carl) There are other designs but these two are the most popular. I read somewhere (MD?) that Calfo doesnt really like surge tanks.

I have used both the Carlson, and the Borneman My first surge (carlson) was set up in 1996. I like the Borneman better. you can use a much smaller pump and it will still work flawlessly. you can control the frequency of the surge and the volume(somewhat).

the depth of the discharge can play a role in how well they work, but if there is enough head room, that can all be compensated for as well. WIth one of Sara's, i feel that the tank was drilled a little too low, and wish we could get that surge tank a little higher. With a higher head, there would be a little more velocity.

Sara, can we move that surge upstairs into the living room we can disguise it :p

Thanks Rod for the clarification ... at least I had the first two letters correct "Ca"

Sure, we can just put it in the stand of the 92's system upstairs since there's nothing under there!

That's no fun. I was hoping it could go in the center of the kitchen table. It would double as a conversation piece.

Just make it a refusurge. :)

It would make feeding the fish easy ... just wait for the flapper to open and turkey baster in the food!
