Substrate question

Substrate question

Hey Sara. You've inspired me. We're starting on setting up a 250. We have a 120 mixed reef currently. What knid of substrate did you go with and what do yoy think of it?

Yeah, I can see the dead skeleton it's growing back on :D It almost look like the the Flamethrower from that photo.

I guess I'll have to take a 2nd look at it! It's one of the first Chalices I ever purchased and I've had it for well over a 1.5 years. I got it from a small shop locally that's not around anymore.

OMG Basenji's! Nice looking Tri!!!

LOL - Yes I have a pair of the monsters! Thanks, the Tri is a 7 year old male named Bond! He's a really good dog when he's sleeping! He too loves my fishtanks as he hunts looking for fish food items placed within his reach and eats them. He destroyed a Eheim autofeeder just last week!

Thanks Kathy! I actually have a real mixture of substrates. I started with the thought of doing at least a 5" Deep Sandbed (DSB). I first put down a shallow bed of Aragamax Sugar Sized Sand for my rocks to stabilize on. I then changed my mind about the DSB and added some Arag-Alive Fiji Pink sand on top of that. I then added a layer of Tropic Eden Calcium Reactor Media on top of it all and mixed it in a bit to try and keep the sand stable for my surges. The surge still likes to move some of the sand, so I also have some crushed coral substrate that's also going to be mixed in for more stabilization efforts!

LOL! That narrows it down to about a dozen places!
Gary

I got it from the Darkside! ;)

Hey Sara,

Looking good sista! I love the rock work. I wish I could have made it down this weekend and I hope you have a good frag-swap tomorrow with NO snow.

Lisa

Thanks Lisa! If I'm not to tired out after the swap tomorrow, I'll post some updated shots of the tank as I fixed the right end of the rockwork and I think it looks a whole lot better!

Sorry you can't make it down here ... darn snow storm!

Wow Sara! I had no idea you had this extensive of a collection...your frag tank looks like krad lord back in its glory days....is the one in the middle of this pic the "mcliffy2 LE" ( ) watermelon? I'm actually thinking I should name it the $30 watermelon, just to have a bit of fun with all the LE madness, what do you think?

I'd love to talk trade if you are looking to grow your SPS collection :)

Hey Mike, nice seeing you today at the swap! The Chalice from you is actually the one on the large plug in the top left with the glare from the lights. One of my Aussie Chalices decided to sting the edge, but it's growing back nicely! I love the LE $30 Chalice name! The one you thought was yours is actually the Tyree LE Pink Watermelon. We can talk trades ;)

Nice build. Awesome LPS collection. Can't wait to see everything in the tank:)

Thank you Stacie!

As promised, here's a few shots of the final rockwork I'm going with:

Our local club had a swap today and I'm acclimating the first coral that is going into the tank now. It's a pink tipped Aussie Elegance. I know it's a touchy first coral, but I've got my fingers crossed! All paramaters have been measured and all seems good to go.

I also sold a decent amount of frags today the swap, so that goes to restocking some of the fish I've lost while in a holding pattern while getting this tank installed ... supermale rhomboid, female pylie, borbonius anthia, bluespot jawfish.
