At least from the pic, it definitely has to be hybrid of something with an achilles (thus the orange tail). My vote on the other half is PBT. Check out this video of an achilles x gold rim - definitely a little bit different: http://glassbox-design.com/2008/rare-fish-achilles-goldrim-hybrid-tang/

Mike - I so wanted to buy that tang when I saw it in person! My systems were just not ready at the time to hold it as he would have needed some attention since he was a bit skinny ... and sunfish11 talked me out of it as well since he needed attention. That's what made me want to hunt for one just like him, but everyone I saw was not as colorful as him!

So the tail in the video looks similar to mine, but the region this fish came from would not have an Achilles in it ...

What region? While Achilles are generally found in the Pacific, and PBTs in the IO, Fish base does say that PBTs can range into the western pacific (and maybe when they are little lost, they get desparate and "drop their standards" to an achilles :) ). I really can't see that orange tail coming from a powder brown, powder blue or gold rim....

btw, its a smart move adding the fairy wrasse early on...I tried adding a flasher wrasse awhile back and it was so timid, it didn't make it.

and rarely available deepwater anthias...this I'm excited to see. :)

I can't recall what Region, but I'll ask again this weekend.

So I went to fishbase.org and was looking around at the tangs, and it really has the Achilles tail from what I can see, and it looks nothing like a powder brown. Looks like good things can come from lower standards ;)

powder blue & powder browns do not have a orange band in the tail......acanthurus nigricans does which is not a hybrid

Matt - does the nigricans have a yellow stripe in the tail or is it just the photo making it look that way? My fish is blue like a PBT and has the orange stripe.

I like the new tang Sara. He looks better than the one you wanted to bring home before you were ready. Very unique.

I just got in to Tampa tonight and I am on the beach again. I just had to rub it in Mrs. Canada, LOL!

I hope the anthias do ok. I have my fingers crossed. If they don't eat soon they are toast. They have very fast metabolisms and go through their reserves quickly. It is a dilemna for sure. They like an established tank but they are so shy that adding them to all the other fish will be to much for them. Hopefully since you got eight the survival will be enough that you get a pretty little group.

nope its yellow (the nigricans is a gold rim)...the more I look, the more I am fairly sure it has to have some achilles in it. Seems yours may be extra rare since it required a species to stray from its typical region...

Jon's on fish feeding duty as I'm in Canada, so hopefully he gets all the feedings in. He said he saw 3 lsst night and they looked like they were eating a little ... not sure where the other 5 are hiding. Hopefully most make it.

On a positive note, the tang loves nori and is eating Rod's Food along with the wrasse.

the stripe is a pale orange on the tail dusky bluish body w/ yellow stripes lining the top and bottom fin....im currently lookinf at 2 of the right now.....same fish
very nice looking....adults darken to chocolate body, white cheecks, keeping the gold bands on the top and bottom fin...the tail stripe might change to yellow

Thanks Matt! So you are thinking its a acanthurus nigricans?

I guess I'll have to document the growth and see what he turns into!

I just got back from Canada and was feeding the wrasse, tang and 2 anthias, and I located a rock that has at lease 4 more anthias hiding in it and they were coming out to eat. I'm so excited to locate more than 2 and to know they are eating!

Also, a bit more detail on the tang. The fish came from Bali and is thought to be a (Acanthurus cf leucosternon x Acanthurus nigricans) hybrid with a very unique colored tail. I guess only time will tell to see what develops when it grows larger!

Sara, very nice fish additions. Glad to here you found more of your anthias. Stocking fish is really fun but so hard to figure out what you want and how they will all get along. At least you have a lot of space. How many fish in all do you have now?? How many are you thinking the new tank can handle??

Thanks Alicia! I actually located all 8 anthias as of last night. I'm feeding them about 5 small meals a day to try and get them out in the open and eating. Right now in the tank it's just the 8 anthias, the small tang and the rhomboid. I'm holding off adding any of my other fish until the anthias are used to the tank and out swimming. I have about 15 more fish to add with the majority of them being 6 fairy wrasses, 5 anthias, bellus angel pair, my naso and rabbitfish. That should pretty much do it for fish!

I'm so glad I got to read through your new build. This is some tank system.:D It is mind-boggling, quite the undertaking....kudos on a job well-done.
Look forward to seeing it progress... beautiful aquascaping too.
