SaraB's 268 Gallon Build¦ Try #3!

Thanks Eric! There are some photos of the surges on page 11 half way down. I have not had a chance to get a video of the surges yet ... just need to coordinate a time with Gary to come record them. I had to replace the metal chain with a plastic one as one broke due to rusting last week. I found a plastic chain at Walmart in a kit with a flapper. All I needed was the chain and replaced it on Friday. They work great for flow, but I still need to work on them to reduce some of the microbubbles I'm getting. We can chat on Saturday while we are like kids in a candy store at the goodie store!

Glad someone else is bugging you for a video for a change. You still like the surges?

Thanks Kenny! There's a bunch more coming in this weekend ... 4 more of the same anthias, female pylei and a female lineatus wrasse. Then everyone else can come out of the holding patern and join in on the fun!

Yes, I still like the flow and so does the naso! I just need to work on the microbubbles a bit yet.

About 90% of the rock in the display is Marco Rock. The large rock on the left is one as well as the entire arch which is made of 2 rocks and one other large piece in there on the right.

Yeah, Marc's stuff is great. I've been by his place to cherry pick Fiji Rock and spent several hours there. He's a lot of fun to talk to, too. Have you seen his new Key Largo Deco Rock? It comes pre-cycled from what I understand. I plan on getting 50-100 lbs. of it soon.

Lets just say he was not cheap ;)

I'm stocked full on rock, so I have not checked out any of his new stuff yet. My friend and I had fun chatting with him at MACNA in Pittsburgh ... gotta love the recliners they had in their booth!
 
Thanks for the video Sara. Do you get that much flow going into the tank from them? What size plumbing is that running from them? 1 1/2" or not even that? How often do you have them firing? Do you just regulate how quick they fire by how quick you fill them up? Do you run a separate pump to fill them? Sorry for all the questions. THis definately has me intrigued.

I know the request will be coming ... video of the surges in the display tank

I need to try a couple of things first to cut down on the microbubbles and then video 2 will come! The plumbing I'm using is a combo of 1" pvc and spaflex. I am happy with them, but as I mentioned, I need to work on cutting down the microbubbles as they are making a mess of the top of my tank. Also, one surge inlet hole in the display was placed too low and I don't get as big of a surge as I do on the other one. I can regulate how often they fire based on their fill rate controlled by a ball valve off the return line that is T'd. My one surge fires every 2.5 minutes and there is a good flow rushing into the display tank.
 
Very cool thanks for all the info Sara. I have been looking at various video's of them posted on the net and everyone I have seen has had microbubbles of some sort. Some had more than others. Is it something that can be dialed in to get rid of the bubbles? I wouldn't think 1" would give you enough flow but it suppose its all about the gravity and how fast they empty out.

Sara, WOW, so much is coming together. Your aquascaping is awesome. I love the arch. That Naso is gorgeous, and I am not a big tang girl. Mostly I stay away form them and said I would never have another one. Now I am on the hunt for a small Tomini tang. I know better than to say "never" in this hobby. I just love the picture with the Little Guy(PBT) under the Big Boy(Naso)...so sweet. Really puts the size in perspective. I am in awe of your system.
The surge system is so cool. Years ago, when Eddie had his shop here in the Bay area, he had surges built in a very similar fashion over a couple of his display tanks. I was so intrigued by them and would love to do a mini surge with my new tank that is going up in the next few months but there is no way I can make that work in our house. To even mention something creative on that scale might just push the other half over the edge, LOL. I hope you figure out your micro bubble issue and I look forward to the in-tank surge video :D.

I don't think one can completely get rid of the microbubbles, it's just part of the surge package I guess. There are some people local here that have been able to cut done on the bubbles, so that's what I'm going to try next. I'm tapping the line just above water level and adding a John Guest Fitting with tubing to try and release some air from the pipe. I'm willing to try a few things before I give up on them. Do they move water ... absolutely as the one filmed removed all the fine sand from the front of the tank and I had to change the substrate in that area.

Thanks, it's about time SunnyX! ;) Just because I'm having so much fun building this tank, I've got another in route on a truck from Miracles ... 42x30x20. I just realized the other day when I accidently clicked page 1 of your thread that we have something pretty similar!
