I finally caught up on the reading of the build. I am along for the rest of the ride. I can't wait to see it all come together.

Thanks for joining the fun!

Sara, WOW, so much is coming together. Your aquascaping is awesome. I love the arch. That Naso is gorgeous, and I am not a big tang girl. Mostly I stay away form them and said I would never have another one. Now I am on the hunt for a small Tomini tang. I know better than to say "never" in this hobby. I just love the picture with the Little Guy(PBT) under the Big Boy(Naso)...so sweet. Really puts the size in perspective. I am in awe of your system.
The surge system is so cool. Years ago, when Eddie had his shop here in the Bay area, he had surges built in a very similar fashion over a couple of his display tanks. I was so intrigued by them and would love to do a mini surge with my new tank that is going up in the next few months but there is no way I can make that work in our house. To even mention something creative on that scale might just push the other half over the edge, LOL. I hope you figure out your micro bubble issue and I look forward to the in-tank surge video :D.

Thanks Alicia ... its been a long and slow process, but that's probably best in the long run as things are getting thought out well and done right the first time ... I hope ;)

There's just a few tangs that catch my eye and the Naso is one along with the Achilles and a Powder Blue. You can't beat the algae munching power of a tang, so there's typically a place for them in our tanks. I have a Tomini in my 92G tank that will move into the new shallow tank as well. They are pretty good fish and not bossy at all ... nice choice!

Hopefully I can get these surges rocking and post a new video next week of flow inside the display tank!

Here is the surge tank video:

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now, on to video 2. I'm still several months away, but once I get into our new house, I'll be playing with a surge.

Frag Tank???? hehehehehe

Nope, its a rimless shallow look-down tank that's replacing my 92G corner tank.

Hey, is that Naso Gus?

Nope, Rod had a leak in his trough tank. While trying fix it, issues arose and needless to say Gus didn't make it. :(

Seeing Gus at Rod's gave me the inspiration to get one as he was such a beautiful fish. RIP Gus as I was there the day he passed away :(

Sara,
Just read the last couple of pgs. and the tank is coming along so nicely. Your arch is "to die for," and it will look stunning when the corals come along.
I love my Naso (he's such a nice fish) I wish you luck with Big Boy - he's a King - very handsome in the tank.
Look forward to seeing the tank progress.....that surge is crazy-good!

Sara, You will love the shallow, look down tank. That is what mine is as of right now. I will lose the look down feature when I set up the new tank as it is about 8" taller :(...but the tank is so gorgeous and will give me a bit more room for corals to grow. Pros and cons. I have thougth about having another stand made that would keep it shorter so I could continue to look down into it. We shall see.

Crap,
Sorry to hear about Gus, he was one cool fish.
Sara,
Nice work so far.
Hope my upgrade takes less time then Nanook.
Maybe some nice weather will help.

Thanks summer6! Big Boy is the highlight of the tank now. The anthias are slowly coming back out from hiding since he's not very threatening.

I got word yesterday the the new tank arrives today ... within the next 2 hours actually! I'm looking forward to being able to see my acan and micro collection in the new look-down tank and actually being able to work on the tank without a ladder like the tall 92G!

Thanks! What are you planning for an upgrade? Do you have a thread yet?

That A250 is skimming away! I just cleaned the beast last night ... yuck! Gotta love the H&S Skimmers ;)

The surges are now rocking! I had a friend over the last 2 evenings helping me with my 2 surges. We ended up venting the lines going to the tank and what a huge difference it made! The one tank where the return line was drilled too low, as I was told, would actually take about 1 minute to drain and put a huge amount of microbubbles into the display during that time. I pretty much had given up on that 1 surge. Well, it got vented last night and now it fires and drains immediately ... problem solved! Big thanks to my friend Ed for helping me with getting the surges to work properly and cutting down on the microbubble levels with both. Now it's time for the next video session ... maybe next week?

No, haven't done a build thread yet.
Purchased Tom Obrecht's 420 system.
Been gathering additonal equipment, should be about done now.
Having issues on getting metal stand made.
Need to get back to Doug on a overflow box.

The surges were vented just above the water line in the tank. A 1" pvc elbow was added and it was tapped with an elbow John Guest fitting with the 1/4" being screwed into that pvc elbow and a 5/8" tube added to release the air and water.

Here's a shot of the first surge vented:

Here's the 2nd surge vented that is way back in the corner and not so easy to get to:

Very cool Sara. Are you happy with the microbubbles now? Where did you run the 5/8" hose too? I am assuming air comes out that way but so does some water?

Eric

I had some fish additions in the display tank this weekend. I was able to visit the Divers Den in person on Saturday with a reef club and I came home with a few goodies!

I added an African exquisite wrasse, a female lineatus and a few more of the same anthias. They were added to the display at 1AM on Sunday and when the lights came on at noon on sunday, I had a lot of activity with the PBT picking on the wrasses. I decided to add some more distraction so I added 3 of my existing male wrasses ... the supermale lineatus, laboutei and pylei. The rhomboid who has been in the tank for a month wants nothing to do with the male lineatus so now he's chasing him all over the tank stressing him out :( Hopefully this stops soon!

Here's some super crappy photos, as usual that shows the added activity:

Here's a better shot of 7 of the anthias out swimming:
