savvy TV folks tune in here

I don't watch much TV. I have the most basic of TW cable and a TV manufactured last century! I'm working on getting the TV. I want to upgrade my signal / service so I can watch Sabres games as clear as possible on a hi def TV. I called Time Warner on the phone yesterday to discuss options but I literally got cut off the phone as the TWC CSR was telling me about beaking news regarding MSG on TWC. I hate dealing with TWC!
I need help. I don't want a boatload of channels... I wanna keep this rock n roll stripped down as much as possible. What would be my least expensive option? I would consider a bundle with internet and digital phone service if it made sense... but as I'm typing this I don't even know what's going on with MSG on TWC! :blown:

ps3, nhl gamecenter (free), netflix ($7/mth), dig antennae ($30) = bye bye time warner!!! this ps3 thing is absolutely phenomenal. i hardly ever use it to play games.
as a side note.... the absolute BEST resolution can only be gotten for free via antennae l. so if u have one of those old aerial antennaes on ur house its worth it to get hooked back up.. otherwise a indoor dig antennae is aboit $30.

you've already lost me :strange:

should I be hooking up an antennae and getting a PS3? Best reception is via antennae? What about HD? To be honest...I've never heard of NHL Gamecenter. The first time I heard of "NHL Center Ice" was in my flat screen thread!
Do you need an app for NHL Gamecenter?
Now you can see my glaring ignorances: Reef aquariums are easier for me to run than televisions :lmao:

Gary, are you purchasing the internet-capable television? If not, you'll need some device to stream hockey games, movies, etc. if you're not hooking up to a cable box. You could also use a computer hooked up to the TV via HDMI cable, but I know very little about that.

As far as over the air antennae, it is an HD signal.

conesus kid +1!
gary, the easiest thing is just to keep twarner.... but i HATE them and i dont watch alot of tv. movies and sports. so i set off on a mission to ditch cable. you will have to have wifi and keep road runner though for anyof this ti work
if u have a smart television (meaning it has "apps" like a smartphone) then you can get netflix... amazon among others. these are services that allow u to "stream" movies and shows for $7/mnth. if ur television is not a smart tv then u need another device outside the tv to access these "apps" of these devices i found ps3 to be phenomenal but most new blue ray players also have this ability.

basically.... get a smart tv. u will essentially be going from mh straight to L.E.D.'s and will have skippes right over pc's and t-5's lol.
btw tom got the new l.e.d. system in today its over the corner tank and it looks PHENOM!!!!! ill start a mew thread for that though.

You get basic (non hi-def) MSG with the regular Time Warner Cable. So, as you know, you'll have to get the upgrade (I think it's their digital cable package).

My wife and I had TWC All in One for a couple of years. We ended up saving money by dropping it and just getting digital cable and Road Runner. We never used the phone, and now have no home phone. It's a decision only you can make, but do you need a home phone? My wife and I never used ours and we don't regret dropping it. We have plenty of cell phone minutes, and waste roll-over minutes every month.

If I were you, I'd just go with TWC Digital Cable, a DVR (like $5 more a month, but totally worth it IMO), and go from there. You'll get all the HD Sabres games on MSG, NHL Network (occasionally), and Versus HD.

I have TWC down hear in Horseheads but it is mostly for the kids. I don't watch too much mainstream TV. If you get a smart TV, make sure it can get the NHL package. Some of the smart TVs only access certain services. If you want to watch a TV show and don't mind being a day/week after it is broadcast you can stream it from the network sites.

You do not "need" a PS3, you can get a smart DVD/BluRay player for a lot less than a PS3. Another option is a home theater PC (HTPC) or media PC. These can be used to record streamed video for later viewing or even delayed start.

Looks like I popped in at just the right time. Time Warner is about to discontinue broadcasting the MSG Network. I, However, have no worries. I have Directv. I will continue to watch the Sabres lose every game straight from my couch. FWIW, TWC CS sucks!!!! Happy New Year, Gary. Make the right decision. :)

TWC is gonna cancel MSG? Perhaps it now makes sense that the TWC CSR got "cut off" while talking to me on the phone about MSG. Stuff like this only happens to me. So now my decisions are in limbo.

TWC drops MSG -eefective today

TWC drops MSG -eefective today

Just got an email from TWC saying "MSG pulls the plug on sports fans." TWC blames MSG for raising the price and not even negotiating with TWC.

TWC does say they will still air 20% of Sabres games through other channels.
