SC Aquariums Owners Thread

OK - Well "Soulpatch" got me worried. I am thinking about using 2 x 130 Grye's ( each about 2 foot from right and left back edges about a 6 inches from the top of the tank) on the back panel pushing water from surface of the back of the tank, downwards into the rocks and forward to resurface in the front of the tank and then moving on the surface going backwards so that my 48 inch smooth internal overflow should catch detritus, etc.

I can test the gyre 130 this week Acer. I have one from the biocube I can move over. But if the mp10 works then shouldn't be an issue. Maybe I did have one too many the night I was messing with my WAVs

Oh man- I was freaking out. Hopefully it was the alcohol and nothing else. How do you like the Gyre 130 - is it quiet? I know the new ones have " upgraded paddles" so they don't break off so easy when cleaning/maintenance. Since my plan is to have the flow go from back to front ( 24 inches) - not side to side ( 60 inches) - I should think 2 smaller versions should be ample.

I will just jump in and give my two cents...

If you are used to Vortechs and their build quality, you will most likely not be happy with Gyres. They do push a lot of water, but just felt cheaply made to me. I started with mp60s on my 200g, tried xf150s for a few months and am now going back to mp10s on my SCA 50g, if that says anything.

I dont think it would be enough personally. I had a gyre 130 at around 60% in a biocube 29 and yes it was newer version with the upgraded rugged paddles. In the 150 I have 2 WAVs on the ends which pumps out more water then the gyre 130 and I am still going to suppliment with at least 1 gyre I already have and possibly a second I need to buy.

I actually like the gyre as a pump. It is dead quiet and moves a ton of water. I dont think they feel cheaply made at all BUT are a pain to take apart and clean.

What I would do instead is mount them vertically on the side glass against the back wall and have each antisync and blow against the back wall. Your returns can hit against the front wall corners. Doing it this way would have a ton of varied flow and would to well to ensure any and all detrious in the back is put into the water column,

Yes I also thought about the vertical mount idea in the back corners - that would also work. With the vertical mount I would need to move up to the 150's.

Options:

1) Wav kit by neptune= $500 and very programmable via my future purchase of an Apex controller. Not cordless. Because these can be "pointed" via the mount bracket I could use these in the back corner and "point" them toward the middle of the tank. Current/flow is cone shaped, not broad.

2) 2 Radion MPWQD40"s = $700 - no cords ( yeah) programmable via reeflink. NO directional "pointing" of current. Current is cone shaped.

3) 2 Grye 150's = $540 + $125 for icecap module. Not cordless. Great quiet broad flow - no directional "pointing".

Hmmm... not sure what to do...

Mind you the WAVs have a very narrow field to be pointed. And your comment about wires in the tank is meh as well. I only see mine since they are on the sides but if you had on the back they would blend with the black vinyl. And if you needed to mount the MPs on the sides I would rather the cord run inside the tank then hanging on the glass outside personally.

You also NEED the apex for the Wavs. They can't be run without it so you need to step up that purchase if you decide to go that route.

As for the gyre regardless if you do back to front or along the back I think you need the 150s. Sure the front to back might be similar to a 75 gallon tank but as I said earlier I had the 130 in a 29 biocube turned past 50%.

If you are going to get the apex I would step up that purchase and get the WAVs personally and see if you need anything else depending on how you do your rock work. I have a deadspot in middle of my tank that my gyre would be perfect for if I mount to overflow. I have been really impressed with the WAVs though and how well they integrate into fusion.

anyone here put a different skimmer in the SCA-120 pnp sump? if so did it work any better? what skimmer did you use? I was thinking of removing the first chamber wall so I could put in a larger skimmer like Vertex 150 or something

On my 75g, I m using the Bubble Magus D8. Was pulling dark skim the first week. I had the 100 sump, fits w/o taking the partition out.

Ordered a 150 gal today...excited!
Spoke to Steve, he said next month overflow covers will be available...nice to keep snails from crawling into the return pipe

Quick update on the new 24x24x24 60gal which is going to be a new stock tank for SCA (I've been waiting for a true cube). Availability has been pushed back from end of July to end of August. I'm worried because once dates start to slip...

considering the amount of custom tanks they are making for members just on this site right now and their normal stock which has introduced a few new tank sizes in the past month I am not shocked one size slipped slightly. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Part of the growing pains for a company starting to come more and more into the spotlight.

Just bought the 66 gallon .. will the MDF stand hold.

Just bought the 66 gallon .. will the MDF stand hold.

Just got my 66 gallon with the black MDF stand. Steve was kind enough to pre-assemble the stand and send it to me. The pallet was super heavy though :twitch:

Checked the MDF stand. There are gaps and chips in it and it seems that stand wasn't painted properly. I've attached pics. I don't know if the stand will hold the weight.

Was so excited that I bought lights before the tank, a pair of Coral Box Moon LED's.

+1, I would reach out to Steve too. There is a good chance when the tank is full those gaps will disappear, but I would still rather be safe than sorry. Those MDF stands are very heavy. I ordered the solid cherry stand but was sent the mdf stand by mistake from SCA's warehouse, WOW, heavy.

Very happy with my cherry stand though. It did have some finish issues though, but I was ok with that as I was planning to refinish it anyways. I would have been happy with it otherwise.

those look to be some pretty significant gaps... i would reach out to steve and provide him the pics

I hope so. I emailed him yesterday with the pics and haven't received a reply yet. Will email and call him again. I honestly think this particular stand is defective and won't be able to take weight of the tank

Beautiful setup 😃😃😃

I don't know what to do. I took the advice of owners on this forum and went for the SCA 66 rather than CAD Lights 68.

The stand is pretty roughed up, with dings and gaps and no response from SC yet. I paid full price for this setup and now I feel like a chump :(
