SC Aquariums Owners Thread

Nearing completion on the stand, The Tardis.
Stained

Chalk Painted Navy

Distressed a little.

Antiqued and waxed.
Last step is to apply PolyAcrylic and get this thing indoors.

Glass tops keep fish and water in - i.e. they cut down greatly on evaporation. They can also keep kids and cats out of the tank. I had a local glass shop cut me a top for my SCA 50g cube, and used 10mm clips from Innovative Marine to place it over the aquarium, resulting in a small gap between the top and the sides. I have zero salt creep, and dust it every few days with a dusting wand.

I also really wish the theory of limited gas exchange when employing a glass or acrylic top would die - with the turnover of water from sump and back, plus a skimmer running, there are typically zero issues with having a glass top on the tank.

Exactly why I use glass tops on all my tanks. Gas exchange with sumps and skimmers should really not be a concern.

I would definitely use a glass top if I did not have a good tight canopy- I may use one even in a canopy to prevent salt creep. But since I am typically lazy I am afraid I would not clean it regularly enough and then the corals would suffer from decreased light.

Yes they offer warranty. I think it is 1 year tank only or 3 years with their wood stand. Someone else can confirm or you can just call up Steve.

just saw this thread. my dream tank is the SC Aquariums 150 60x24x24. Ill have it one day! Until then ill look at your tanks haha

Hi all I'm new to the hobby and RC. I was about to pull the trigger on a RS Reefer 170, until I saw some posts about SCA's.. After doing some research and emailing Steve at SCA, I placed my order for a 50gal cube drilled for a herbie and I upgraded to the 36" oak stand. I plan on using the stock pump and skimmer to start out and will upgrade if needed. I'll also be using a Kessil a360we for lighting. Anyone have any pointers on setup or care to share things they wish they would have done on their setups? thanks

There are build threads in the tank journal forum on here. Look at Homer's for one that is close to the size you are getting. I personally would throw out the plumbing the tank comes with and use all of my own PVC and such for it but that is me.

Thanks for the heads up, I did not mention it but was planning on doing that. thanks again.

I would say check out my build thread BUT be leary that it will likely cause you to spend WAY more money then you thought. LOL.

I have probably cost some like Blinky to spend well more then he had budgeted... HA

Yep- my same tank as well. MY bill thread doesn't show costs- so heart friendly. LOL. Much of the equipment ( skimmer, lights, pumps, rock, sand, refugium/sump tanks) I am using in my new setup I already had or got used for cheap. So , it can be done - but even then it ain't a cheap hobby.

I dont put the costs in my thread either for most things but plenty of people have messaged me that seeing how I did things or the equipment I have got them to get it as well spending the money.

Its like anything in life though where you can go all out or do things to meet a budget.

I will say though that my monthly running costs alone are around:

say 50 for electric
40 salt
figure 10 in RODI filters
12 in T5 bulb wear
probably another 10 in food
say 5 in reactor media

So right there as a bad estimate is 127 a month in running costs.

Well speaking of a costly hobby... I placed my order for a apex classic.
Lol. That's a worthwhile purchase though.

I now but things that look nice. Could have gotten a regular regulator for my co2 setup but instead of spending 150 to 250 f9r normal regs i dropped 500 on custom....

Like i said you can go either way in this hobby. But sine things are well worth the price like the apex. Best thing i ever bought
