Schooling large/aggressive tangs together in one tank ?

Hey everyone, I have a tank that is currently due for a re-stocking, and I've always loved tangs. However some of my favorite species tend to be a bit on the more aggressive/delicate side, so I seek your advice. Everyone would be going into the same tank, if that helps anything.

As it stands, I have a single Vlamingi Tang that's about 1-1.5 feet long, and he's the only tang in there right now.

I've been looking at adding the following species/group sizes thus far:

  • 2 more Vlamingi's to make a happy three
  • ~5 Achilles Tangs
  • Perhaps a small school of Powder Blue Tangs

I've also been considering a few other species, especially a pair or trio of Naso unicornis. I really like clown tangs too, however I know they can be quite aggressive. Does anyone know how how they do in groups in larger tanks ?

Thanks in advance for the input everyone !

No offence but you are probably considering the worst possible mix of tangs. You need a definite rethink.

I had an 8x3x3, and wouldn't have considered the Vlamingi, let alone with all the other tangs.

Oh, but my dear Easttuth, nothing is impossible. A closed mind is the only thing that can ensure things have a 0% chance of happening.

As for the others, I agree my tank stocking ideas are pretty crazy.

However, its a pretty big tank. Its a full length 85. So definitely on the larger side of things. That's why I think the multi tangs might just work, cause they have lots of room to get away from each other.

Also, did I mention, that by 85, I meant 85 thousand gallons? That's right, 85,000+ gallons, along with a 35 hundred gallon separate quarantine system.

Also for sc50964 and snorvich, I can't remember the exact dimensions off the top of my head, but its about 75 feet long, 15 feet wide, and 13-14 feet deep.

So sufficient to say, I have a fair bit of space to work with. Hell, my quarantine is larger than 98% of peoples entire systems.

Also I snapped a picture of the Vlamingi tang for everyone today :) Sorry its so crappy, an iPhone can only do so much.

Nice tank. Have you considered some neon gobies. Though they don't school, I think 5 or 6 would make a really impressive addition to your tank.

How can you be so irresponsible for recommending something like that? You should know 1 pair of neon goby is good for a full 100,000 gallon.

To be honest - that Atlantic blue tang or the surgeonfish school very nicely together. I think a group of about 20 would give you the look you want. If I had the room, I would go with a school of about 200 pilchards and some aggressive fish to keep them together.

You my friend can do any combo of tangs that you please. Can you please post some more shots of the tank?

I would say your QT tank is larger then 99.999% of peoples DT not 98% of them.

Is their a link to a live video stream? Is this a public aquarium?
