Scott's Oceanic Illuminatas (build thread)

Hey Everyone, I haven't posted anything yet about the system I'm building now so I thought I'd share some pics. The stand and hood are completely done as of now, but I'll post pics from the night I got started.

I chose to do two 57g Oceanic Illuminatas side by side instead of one large tank so that I could have a display tank, and a display fuge(or)frag tank side by side on the same stand. The tanks are 5 inches apart, share the same stand, and same 1 piece hanging hood. The lights are on order as of today. I decided to go with a 250w 14k phoenix mogul base on each tank, with coralvue ballasts. I bought a used refugium sump with two overflow intakes just like I needed and cleaned it up to bran new. It is only about a year old, the thing is immaculate. My reeflo dart will be powering both tanks, dialed down of coarse. This is going to be a quick build thread since it's actually almost done and ready to be transferred. Here are a few pics from the night it was started. Someone in my neighborhood was tossing out the wood. At first I didn't even think of trying to use it from what the surface looked like. After about 5 days, we took one piece to the house and cut it up to see what the inside looked like, it's perfect. It was only surface warn, which only ruins the cosmetics of it. That didn't matter since the whole thing is covered in pine select anyways . That saved me alot of money.

This stand is definatley overkill. I just wanted to make sure it was never going to fail. Now I can sleep at night ;)

I bought a stain that looked good in home depot, but terrible when applied.. Here it is as the first coat..

Same wood, drying after the first coat. A friend of mine game me some dark cherry wood stain, and when I added a coat of the cherry to this orange stain it came out to a color that I was searching for all along :) You'll see in the next couple photos what it turned out to be.

Here is a side panel, with the cherry stain over the orangeish stain. I love this color and I was very lucky it turned out this way.

Here is how we connected the panels to the frame itself. I didn't want to see the screws of coarse.. So we countersunk the screw holes and I stained wooden buttons to plug the screw holes.

Here are the wooden button plugs being stained. I drilled screws through a scrap wood and tapped the ends of the plugs onto the ends of the screws to hold them for me while i stained and dried them. Boy was that fun, not...

Here is how we built the actual panels themselves without having to see the screws. Boy is this one awesome tool ! Check out how it countersinks these pilot holes.

We used the same idea when building the cabinet doors. However, the inside piece you see, is actually placed into a slot we routed around the entire inside lip of the doors frame. Much like you would slide the glass inside of a picture frame. It is never coming out. I'm glad we did it this way. we also prettied up the edges of the frame too by rounding it off with a nice design bit.

Here is that door, with that panel all assembled. Notice the stained buttons covering the screw holes that we countersunk.

Here is the underside of the hood. Added a couple wood braces there over each side of where the tanks will be, little more meat to mount my reflectors onto.

Another view of the hood.

Finally, all done ;) Sorry the hood isn't hanging but that's it resting on top of the stand.

Sorry for this crappy photo, This was taken with my cellphone.. But here you can see mostly what it will look like hung.

Don't have a pic of the tanks on the stand yet, but we did put them on already and they fit GREAT, it really looks amazing. I'll get more pictures as soon as I can, thanks for checking it out :) I'll get pics of the light installation as we do that next week. That's it for now. Hope you like it.

Looks Awesome... Cherry stain is nice.

Yep I love the cherry. It's much better than the orange on the first coat.
Yes, pocket screws rule. ;)
And I am the one with the shirt on by the way, The shirtless hillbilly is my stepfather. Wonder when he'll read this :D

We were going to go to the beach today but I decided to get some things done around here.
Started painting the back of the tanks, so I feel accomplished on a Sunday.......

Prep the work area.

Ok that was a joke... I used Black Krylon spraypaint to paint them. Here's a pic of everything used in the process.. Very simple.

Here's what was done last night. Reflectors are mounted in the hood, and the hood is now hanging in it's place. The dart return is finished and ready for mounting tonight. Everything is going smoothly and the transfer should be this weekend.

Here's Morris installing the reflectors

Ohhh I'm a sore pup.. 14 hours straight today to get this done.. Everything is working incredibly, and I couldn't be happier with this set-up. I'll post pics once I have everything situated properly. Most likely a of couple days.

Time for some Captain Morgan, someone join me to celebrate ;)
