Scrapz's Ultimate 8x4 Shallow Build

Interesting thread, I hope that your able to overcome the details of your instalation to get your aquarium running.

I also have a shallow tank which I recived from a freind, The biggest problems with this kind of shallow tank is over stocking *long term. We found the corals once reaching waters surface became more dence and restricted flow within the aquarium.
Your island overflow may just be the trick, I would sugest to split your return to arrive at both ends.

To combat the flow problem in my tank I drilled for a closed loop. Will see how it goes in another year or two lol.

Good luck. Following

The thing I've found to be really difficult with having a shallow tank, which yours is more so, is flow and sand. I think it would be better to have a few MP40s to distribute the flow better than that huge MP60. Of course none of that matters if you go bare bottom haha. Looking forward to seeing your tank come together. :)

This shallow tank is begging for Gyre XF150s everywhere!

noooooo.... tear down the house :lolspin:

Upgrade house time?

Make it fit... MAKE IT!!
Can you remove the door frames?

It's not that the tank won't fit but it will be the only tank in there due to it's size. Originally I had planned to run it parallel with the other tank so that I wouldn't have to tear down the other system.

Wow now thats a tank

Just 4" taller would have been perfect..

I was thinking the exact same thing I thought originally but i went to measure my current frag tank and it's the exact same height. You're completely right, as frags everything. There will be alot of chopping with colonies though or maybe it'll force me to upgrade:dance:

Heck yes! This is a great size tank. I can't wait for your pictures!

YES!!! It's a powerhead I've been waiting to get better as their early revisions seemed to have issues..

Build the stand a little taller, and put the frag underneath..
With the length of that tank, you should have room..

Been busy with work but still havent decided what I'm going to do with the tank. In the meantime, a buddy is helping me pretty up my test fixture I was using on the cube.

The monstrosity!

Heatsink bolted /w thermal compounded onto the aluminum plate where LEDs will be mounted. Decided this would be cleaner and hopefully displace more heat.

LEDS all wired up. Next we'll be mounting the ballast/drivers all on top of the frame.

As you can see from this photo, the light distrubution is quite even. This should be able to cover a 30" depth quite easily..
