Sell the Tunze Streams???

Trying to configure the flow in my new tank. Remember 4 wide, 3 feet front to back. I have one Vortech MP40, BUT, I've never used it. I've set them up on 2 other tanks. Both 180's, with them on the side panes opposing each other.

I have 2 programable Tunze streams. They are INDESTRUCTIBLE. They ran for 4 years in my 180. I cleaned them.....oh yeah....NEVER. Never had a problem with them.

Trying to think about how to incorporate the 2 of them with the Vortech, all on the back wall of the tank. Should I try to sell the Tunzes (paid over $700 for the pair)? If I could get even $300 for them, I could grab another MP40 without breaking the bank.

Would 2 Vortechs on the 4 foot back wall, with 2 penductors at the front top facing back towards the vortechs to create a gyre be enough for the whole 200 gallons? I could throw an MJ in the back along the bottom on a timer to "storm" every 12 hrs or something to help with dead spots?

Long winded I know.......or should I just use the Tunzes and keep the Vortech in the middle back??????

Opinions please.

something tells me you already know what I did :)

FWIW I re-read the newest Vortech instruction manual earlier today when I was on the throne. Not to slight Tunze Streams (which are great!) but Vortech rules hands down.

Two improvements I would suggest Vortech do:

*increase the duration of long pulse mode
*enable the wet side to be angle adjustable

increasing duration of long pulse mode shouldn't be terribly difficult but I don't know if there's an easy solution to making the wet side angle adjustable....

anyways, to get back to the original question.... sell the Streams IMO.

Glad to hear you're getting plenty of fiber. One of my largest concerns is the lack of adjusatility, with regard to angling it. But I was thinking, for my proposed application it might not matter. The reliability is a larger concern.

I don't think Vortech reliability is a concern except for water getting on the Vortech controller. I figured you were wondering about the 'angle' angle :)

but I don't know if there's an easy solution to making the wet side angle adjustable....

Heh, yeah physics basically prevents this from happening easily. Magnetically coupled motors like the vortechs are awesome, for sure. But if you want angle adjustability on it, you'd have to either have HUGE magnets, or universal adapters for the shaft, either of which will make the setup really big/clungy, and/or sap it's power :(

OR

design a wet side prop housing that can direct water flow at an angle

gawsh I'm so smart!

My application will not require any desired angulation. SO, for this tank, they will be just fine. If I was doing another front view 6 foot long tank, I'd have stuck with the Tunzes. I don't like the look of Vortechs on the outside, side panel of tanks....unless it's in-wall.

The long view of a 6 footer through the side panel is one of my favorite ways to view a reef tank. That Vortech right in the middle of that.....pbbbbbt!
