Seriously what pellets you guys are using?

Thx for all the help and suggestions so far guys!

My time at home overlaps roughly 2 to 3 hours lights on and I try to feed every 30 minutes with small dosage of frozen. That's about 4 to 6 times a day. I guess the frozen is just so good that I don't have to train my fish to eat them. I thought damsels and chromis not being picky eater at all would just accept NLS pellets given the popularity here. Another thing I notice is maybe the 1mm pellets are just too big. Even with frozen, the fish pretty much ignore the bigger piece. Maybe .5mm would be a better choice for small fish?

All of my fish, except my pair of banggai cardinals, love NLS. My fairy wrasses and leopard wrasse have a hard time swallowing the 1mm pellets though, so I think I need to try out the .5mm.

FWIW, I've always had good experiences with Formula 1 and 2 pellets too. They don't float as much and are a bit smaller than the 1mm NLS.

One thing I should mention is that you dont want to leave your mysis and pellets together for more than about 10-15 minutes, any longer and it just turns into one big hunk :) So dont set it out for like an hour then plan on feeding it, it will just come out in a glob. Triggers and angels and bigger fish like that, but anthias probably wont :)

I have a blue face angel that LA told me it was eating mysis and instant ocean pellets, but i havent seen it touch a NLS and Forumula 1 Ocean Nutrition pellet yet.

any chance it does eat IO pellets and not the two i've been trying??

Did you buy the NLS from an LFS?

It may be you got stale/expired old stock item.

regardless of how good or bad NLS pellets are, I think your fish must eat it unless there is something wrong with the pellets you got.

I am pretty sure LFS cannot move the merchandise as fast as say Marine Depot or DFS (like the RN products you posted in another thread), so I would not be surprised if you got bad one if you indeed got it from LFS.

I only buy dry goods that I can be guaranteed is unopened, unused and new (as in not expiring) from LFS. I have bad experiences with LFS dry goods, not to mention the higher price.

I bought the NLS from petco and the Formula 1 from my LFS. My other fish eats them fine and the expiration date is still good.

I tried the no frozen theory tonight. :) I decided to feed late to make the fish slightly hungrier. I then feed the NLS pellets first. For the first time, the chromis attempt to eat them but split the pellets right out. This gives me hope. I still think if the pellets are .5mm, it might be easier for them.

So Formula 1 pellets are equally high quality?

I had a fish that was not eating NLS pellets
Then I tested Gro-Tech nutrivital plus the fish loved it
It has the most vitamins that I know of in fish food but remember not for every use

when i had my chromis, it'll spit out the 1mm pellets that i was feeding my other fish, but would eat up the .5mm fine.

I feed my fish Hikari Megabite, Hikari S, and JBL Marin Pearl. I also feed them frozen mysis(which is also manufactured by Hikari) and brine shrimp that my LFS grow in small quantities.

the question was meant for the OP. anyways, it looks like your pellets are good if other fish are eating it.

Oh yes? Sweet! I am going to try find the .5mm NLS pellets this weekend.

my chromis and yellowtail eats the 1mm just fine. it may be the pellets you got that are bad. I don't think you need to get 0.5mm, just get another one from another source.

with NLS, all my fish will eat it on my first and second drop, starting with third drop, pellets will start hitting the bottom of the tank. This does not happen with formula one. every single drop I make (up to 10) no pellet ever hit the bottom. every formula one pellet gets eaten before it hits the bottom.

I got my NLS and formula one from marine depot.
I use the 1mm NLS. The formula one small pellet seems a little larger in size, but the pellets are a little moist. They are sealed also. I cannot remember if the NLS jar was sealed or not when I first got it, and I do not see any expiration date on the container.

I have the formula two pellets, I find they sink a lot faster than 1mm NLS pellets. I don't feed pellets often, as only my clowns will eat them. I just bought a little jar of Thera-a NLP two days ago, they do come sealed and have the expiration date on the lid and jar. I may try the method of starving the fishes out for a few days and see if I can get every fish to accept pellets.

FWIW, I have two fish that were initially very poor eaters (Moorish Idol and Achilles Tang). I got them both eating frozen first, then pellets by starting with NLS "Finicky fish formula".
Once they got used to that, they'll eat anything. Since I feed four tanks in four areas of the house, it got to be a pain to transport a variety of containers around. For simplicity's sake, I poured all my pellets (NLS, ON 1 and ON 2) into a 2 qt container and mixed them, then refilled the canisters. All the fish in the house eat them all just fine.

I love NLS pellets. My main food source for all my fish. Your damsels will take to it eventually if you don't give them something else.

If you don't feed them anything else, wouldn't they eventually take anything? I guess what makes NLS special compare to the other pellets? I guess I kind of expect NLS to be such a great pellets (only base on reputation and recommandation here in RC) that my damsels and chromis would just eat them like frozen.
