Shallow reef tank Club

my current tank is a 135 and its 72x18x24 and the top of the tank is 5'7" off the floor when I reach in now it gets the end of my sleeve wet. The next tank will be much lower so it is easily viewable from my computer chair. I was worried about the size of my sail fin tang in a tank 16" deep. The local zoo has some in a beach tank and they seem to do OK in a shallower tank so I think I'm going to go with the 16" deep. My other concern was reaching the back corner of the tank. Its going to be in the corner of the room and it will be 4' square, so if it is 24" deep I might not be able to reach the back corner where the overflow is.

Finally! Tank & Stand joined together at last.

That tank is sick! I love Miracles. :D

DaveG99 the stand looks great. I purchased one of those breeders @ petco the other day too. Petco Pals rocks. What a deal. Looks like you're one step ahead of me. I still don't know what type of stand to get or to build one myself. Are you planning to put a glass-holes overflow on it. I hear they are good. Good luck.

Hey dave have you thought about cutting off the black trim and euro bracing the breeder? It would look much better and you seem to have some DIY skills. The stand is quite nice.

You know I never though of that. I just may do that. I got to see how much the glass would be for the eurobracing. Thanks for the idea! By the way I really like your tank. My next tank will be a custom 48x24x16 shallow rimless. I just cant spend the $$$ on it right now so this $79 petco 40 breeder will have to suffice. By the way my doors will be here today for the stand. I ordered some from a place in tennessee for $34 shipped for Oak doors.

Wanted to see what experience everyone has with lighting a tank that has a DIY clear mesh top (or equivalent pond netting) to keep jumping fish in the tank for open top tanks.

Has anyone measured PAR levels for 400W or 250W MH (let's say on good reflectors - lumenarcs, SE, and good bulbs - radiums) with and without the mesh top? I'm just thinking that there's got to be some amount of reduction in light reaching the corals. I'm just not sure how significant it is.

Want to keep some wrasses with SPS, but may have to re-think my fish list.

Thanks!

I have to be honest, I like sand. In the tanks without sand it doesn't look natural. When I was diving in the Caymans I saw landscapes of rocks, coral, fish all on top of sand. Just my opinion. Otherwise I like to setups. Tell me if I'm wrong here or why you like your tanks without sand.

easier to keep sps and other high flow corals....most people dont actually do it cuz they like how it looks. the functionality of not having sand outweighs the aesthetics of having sand.

Megabite, what are you going to do with it? just a big frag tank?

Well, I'm slowly moving toward making this an anemone tank of sort and maybe leaving a portion for frags. Here' a couple of pictures of my start and a FTS before adding the rock and anemone. The anemones are on the right side of the tank.

Does this qualify for the rimless/ shallow tank club? :strange:

I had to improvise. Its about 40" across and 8" deep.

I took these pics a few days ago. I've since added more light and put some corals in it. I'll add some updated pics soon. Does this qualify for rimless too? LOL!!!
