Shallow reef tank Club

OK tmantaylor18's tank pushed me over the edge. Think I'm finally going to pull the trigger on a 36x24x17 rimless shallow tank build.

I pulled the trigger and ordered my 36"x24"x17" 65g shallow tank so now its time to think about lighting. I would like to try an all T5 setup on this one and the tank will be mostly SPS. The Tek 8x39w has been suggested. The other possibility is the ATI PM but its twice the cost. Any thoughts on whether the extra $$$ is worth it for active cooling and better reflectors? Or, is the Tek more than sufficient (without adding fans as I don't want to ruin the look with a bank of fans on the back) for a shallow 17" high tank?

the ATI is worth the money not only is it 40% brighter bulb for bulb but the bulbs last 3x as long, so in the long run its worth it.

a 6x39w ATI would still be brighter than a 8X39W tek.

now with that said, both will grow corals in a 17" depth tank.

another option would be the Aquatinics tx5

Very nice guys !!! My next tank will be a long / shallow tank ....

Getting the armpits wet has gotten old ....lol

Thanks GSM. I looked up the ATI 6x39w and its 13.5" wide. As I'm new to the T5 world, if I had the fixture say 4" above the tank, will the 13.5" be able to cover the 24" wide tank and still cover the 17" depth. Same question on the Aquatinics as its 9.5" wide.

The spread of T5's are much more dispersed than a MH bulb. A bulb fixture would have absolutely no problem covering 24" depth and 17" height.

You actually got me to change my mind on what dimensions I want. I wanted 36x36x20, but after looking at your tank I have decided to get 48x30x18.

You have a great looking tank, thanks for the inspiration.

I have a 36x36x20... I think you made the right choice, anemonebuff. Taylors tank made me call and get some quotes for a similar sized tank. Its about as big as you can go, while staying rimless, and not moving to the big boys like AGE.

I recently bought used ,two 72x24x16
I was starting to wonder if i made a mistake in buying them. So after seeing the many great looking shallow tanks here welllll.

The plan is one as DT ,the other a sump. So for now they need to be resealed as a precaution ,build a stand and get my local friend to cut me some baffles for the sump. It will be a little while till it's set up. But the plan is to replace the current one with a glass tank for easier maintenance.

Thanks for the nice eye candy. And now im kinda pumped.

Where do you order your tanks from?

Bob1::::: Check a few post's up there is most of the common one's listed.

this is my 28"long x 20"deep x 18"high , home made set up.

cant here a thing at the moment as it has no water in it,lol,

but i have used them in the past,
and if you dont have the flow to fast that it fills the outlet, and the other end of the pipe is above water, allowing the water down the pipe to discharge onto sponge, then its a pretty quiet system.

using soft, flexy pipe to the sump, rather than rigid, makes a massive difference on the noise.
