Shallow reef tank Club

Here is my 36x30x18 tank with a 36x24x24 sump. My goals are to keep the electric bill, sound level, and maintenance to a minimum on this tank. Still have not decided what to try to grow in it yet though. Any suggestions?

I am partial to accurate biotope setups myself, or at least good attempts at it. Looks like a clarki pair in there so that leaves you with a lot of leeway as far as what direction to go. Your rockwork reminds me of a patch reef so you could go that route if you wanted to as well. Pick a general location that you like with life you like and that you shouldn't have to hard a problem in obtaining livestock and run with it I say. :)

Just got my tank today, can't wait to set it up. 32x20x14 from Advance Acrylic. John did an excellent job, wouldn't you say?

First tank build....

First tank build....

This tank build I am planning has evolved from buying a 'normal' 180g to building a shallow reef tank. After seeing this thread I have decided I like the look so much that this is the way I want to go. That said, you can't see these tank dimensions just anywhere and with no prior experience I am not familiar with the "look" of these dimensions except from what I see in the pics here. So my question for you is, if I say I want my tank to be 30" wide, height can be 16" or 18" at most, and my length can be no less than 48" and no more than 72", is there some ratio or some recommendation you have that would be most aesthetically pleasing for a shallow reef? I can go 72" length but It seems like 72"x30" is just too long for that width and that the image of a shallow reef tank is closer in L and W. Is there some constraint that i need to conssider? Your thoughts?

DonanldLL - I think it can be what ever dimensions you like. The only thing that I saw that was an issue through reading the threads is about height and if you a sandbed. I guess the powerheads will move the sandbed if you get too shallow. Don't think you will have that problem with 16 or 18" for height. IMO I think 72x30 is huge. :) but bigger is better right?

I have 2 MP40s in a 44x22x16 with #1 sand. Lots of flow; no sand being tossed around by the powerheads.

Cool Kenny. Good to know. I'll be setting up my new tank soon and wondered if I need to look into new equipment if I ran into the sand moving issue. Good to know what works.

I finally got my new tank set up. It's 48x24x12 lit by a fit led fixture with 84 leds.

Thank you...I still have to finish the trim on the stand and paint the acrylic around the led

Edit: oh and work on the wiring to tidy that up

I'm guessing tank isn't up any more...I'm assuming that's a leak and how long did that take to happen?

The water was slowly added over a 24hr period from 6-19 to 6-20 and the rock was added on 6-20. I noticed the seam an hour before i posted. Its not leaking yet. Hopefully it will last through the night.
