this is exactly the size rimless tank i am saving to have built. If i use regular glass its $1000 from glasscages.com (3/4" glass on walls )

i am waiting to hear the price for the starfire for the three visiblewalls.

Reading this thread a few months back made me want a shallow tank and I had always wanted to build a tank so I went for it. I built the tank and stand myself the dims are 48x24x14.

I see a lot of 20" deep tanks. Is that the optimal depth for a shallow reef cube? I'm looking at an Ocean View tank, 30.5x30.5 LxW....and then I' can specify the height. Is there a certain math ratio that works for cubes or is it just preference. Would 21 or 22 work just as well or throw off the proportion?

Personally, I wouldn't say 20" would be classed as a shallow tank but it's mostly dependent on the width. If it was 6 foot maybe.

hi guysi order shallow tank 48 x30 x16 tall ,16 inches tall will be problem with sand bed, like the water flow to pop out the sand bed.any recomendations on the lights i like led lights any help it will be nice.thank you.also i am going to sell my 150 gallons tank 60x24x24 glass 1/2 inch tick glass not drilled, and frag tank 22x22x10 inches tall with 150 watts orbit mh,any body interest let me now.

I would say shallow is as far as you can get away with regarding keeping livestock. I personally wouldn't attempt to keep a Naso in like 6 inches of water as I'd think that would stress it and many other fish out. On the other hand if you are doing a tidepool or maybe a sea grass setup then I see nothing wrong with a really low water level (assuming correct livestock is added). I think the basic idea of this thread is that your tank should be twice as long and/or wide as the water level is. So a water level of 20 inches you should be running a 3-4' long tank and/or maybe the same front to back. To me that is a shallow tank and it scales that way no matter the total water volume. That's just my opinion, I believe the OP stated what he was looking for regarding what makes the cut off...I should probably go read it again. :p

Thoughts on 12" height?

Thoughts on 12" height?

I'm thinking of a 100 wide/long. The dimensions are 72"x24"x12", do you think 12" is to shallow?

@coralreefdoc: Looks great so far! Do you have a build thread?

@doork: Not at all. People will warn you about aquascaping difficulties, but just know that you'll have to go about it a bit differently and you'll be fine. My current build is the same footprint, but 5" taller (72x24x17). Your desired size would look killer rimless.

Personally, I would go at least 16-18 on 24 width, 12 would look funny. Not to mention after sand is factored in you'd only have ~10in water column. 72x24x18 is a great look
