hi I'm looking at doing a large shark tank so
ok all most got her talked in to letting me build a 2.5' tall block wall down one part of the basment to make a 10' x 15' x2.5'
with a small peir to walk out on

with this pond liner 45 mil
http://catalog.pondliner.com/viewProduct.cfm?item_id=84230

what would i use for filters
big skimmer
and big bio ball or live rock towers with spry bars like 20"x20" 6' tall
and UV
sound good

you will need to use more than a block wall to hold back that much water. i would recomend using a fourm and then pour the concrete and use rebar in it. the constant pressure of the water on a block wall would cause it to burst over time. also i would consider using an aquarium epoxy to line the tank with. it will seal the concrete perminantly. what are you plannning on using for a viewing panel? acrylic?

if you use a really good skimmer you dont need the bio tower. bio towers can leack nitrates back into the water over time.

If it is only going to be 30" tall he wouldn't have a viewing panel. It would be a look down, correct?

the only problem with a look down tank is the glare from any lights. you wont be able to see the ebeauty of the fish in the tank when you look down in the water. a front viewing panel is really the only way to have a really nice view of those fish.

that is a cool design but i really think you need to use pored concrete to make the walls. block walls wont have the ability to hold back that much water in that long of a wall. it wont cost much to make the wall out of poured concrete. and if you use acrylic for the 2 viewing pannels i would recomend reinforcing them with someting on the top other wise you will have to sue some super thick acrylic to keep the panels from bowing out on you.

huh should be interesting to see how it turns out =) not bad design but aye you will need somthing on those glass pannels o_O

I assume that this is going in you basement. And I assume that the floor is already concrete. You could drill the floor and put in rebar, then lay 12" block and fill the block with concrete. Once done, you could concrete the inside of the blocks (kind of like a thicker stucco) then use the epoxy Spazz was talking about to coat the whole thing. Then add Acrylic and poof you’re done....Simple... But that's just my $.02

As for the Skimmer you just happen to have one of the best Huge skimmer builders on the planet talking to you about your tank... No it's not me... LOL but I'll give you a hint his name rhymes with spazz... and he has a really cool license plate....

Harleyguy
you hit it right on the nose to my thoughts
there will be reinforcement on the Acrylic
the pic was just a quick sketch
they hold back a lot more watre with just sand bag in floods

i have a local guy that make AAA+++ skimmers and acrylic tanks
not to down spazz tho

This is awesome, I envy you. How did you talk your wife into this one???. Ever see the long beach aquarium shark tank??.

have not told her yet J/K
but right now she is trying to make me keep it to 8'x 10'
the pic is acuatly 8'x 19'

this tank is in it's infantcy so do not think it will spring up over a weekend

You don't have kids do you? You never plan on having them do you?
This would not be the best idea with kids. Being that they would love to swim in a pool in the basement.
"Dad.... this fish keeps biting me in the leg..."

Great looking plan you have.
I'm just always glad to see builds like this, it makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that doesn't care about ruining the resale on my house LOL screw it just never move right?
Can't wait to see this thing materialize.

my dads mate has a very similar tank/lagoon thing to what u have shown i nthe CAD drawing. his is 9 x 8 x 3' and is not for sharks or rays.. ( not big enough ) he has large marine fish and a few corals along the back ( the only MH lit area ) ill try getting some shots when my dad goes over next. ( he got me into reefing )

MORE TO THE POINT... he origionally built it himself as u wantto with a block wall. and got a company in to line it ( pool company ) they sed HELL NO. itll just collapse one filled. he then riped it all down and had it framed and poured. ( it has viewing on 2 sides in 1" glass ) and has never had any problems since
