shark tank algae issue

Two orange-shoulder tangs managed to thrive in a tank with 5 sharks until they became lunch after 18 months of co-existence. Since their demise, I have had a ferocious outbreak of green hair algae on all the rocks, and of course cannot put any algae-eating fish in there anymore. I could use some input on what would cure the algae problem but would not be attractive to white tip, black tip and a nurse shark. thanks...

I don't remember the screen name he also is on the board housing large sharks . I turned him onto a aquarium engineering sulfur reactor to keep nutrients under control.

Another person that I know had the same issues as you. He also has a large shark system. I recommended him to run a sulfur reactor so that he could still feed heavy and still have low nutrient issues . This will cut down on your algae problems. I will as him to try and post a picture on this thread. He purchased a large sulfur reactor from aquarium engineering check out there sight.

shark tank algae issue

Greg--thanks for the clarification. I did check out Aquarium Engineering, he espouses a sulfur reactor to keep nitrates in check. The tank I'm involved with is a 3,000 gal unit, with an old, but not-used Ca reactor plumbed in line. I wonder if that would work with sulfur beads ?? I'll have to try to get it going again--can't hurt. Thanks again...

I have two UV systems working on two 1500g tanks, and they, too, have high nitrates and phosphates but no hair algae because the tangs keep it under control. I really don't think UV will affect algae blooms, and I've never heard that UV reduces high Po4 or No3.

Not sure how big your sharks are, but I know the bigger they get they tend to leave tiny fish alone, assuming they are well fed. That said, you could try a bunch of freshwater mollies converted over to saltwater as they will devour algae. Otherwise urchins and GFO are other options. Perhaps a combination of two or more.
