Sharks?

So I been reading a lot on this site, and find the fact that people keep sharks totally amazing! KUDOS to you! But my curiosity is peaked now, and I would like to know what's the smallest shark to keep in a tank, and the largest to keep in a tank? I mean people don't actually keep Tigers, Black Tips, Hammer Heads, and Great Whites in there front rooms do they? (Being sarcastic, but do they) Are there mini sharks that are like 6in that fit in a tank? My daughter wants to be a "Shark Doctor" when she grows up, and she'll wig when she finds out people have them for pets. Lol "Happy sweet 16 baby, instead of a car.... here's a shark!"

People do keep Black Tips, but only rich rich people do... They need about a 20,000 gallon tank. You could get a small FW shark, some of those stay about 6". But just about all SW sharks kept will reach at least 2'.
 
Oh I'm not interested in keeping a shark. Maybe many years down the way but not anytime soon. I didn't know FW had sharks. Are they actual sharks or wannabe sharks?

They're "sharks", they don't look like real sharks like you would think of in an ocean, but I don't know if they are actual real sharks in FW. (But there are SW ones that can live in FW for a short time)
 
A smooth hound is probably the easiest swimming shark you could have. They get about about 4 ft and are not ORV, meaning that they can rest on the bottom. Cost is about $300. Rec around 3000 gal IMO but people always argue that. They lack teeth and the real mackerel shark look.
 
Hmmm interesting.

If you have a shark, can you please explain to me why you have a shark? Personally I would probably get one just because I can say I have a shark, not because of the respect I have for them. I think 3000 gals is a little big for the front room, so where are these tanks kept?

What about the tiny little sharks that only get 6" that I saw on animal planet? Does anyone keep these? If I remember correctly they were blind.

those sharks that are blind are 6 inches probably live deep in the ocean and live in cold waters below 65 degrees. i have a coral catshark and its indestructible!...i like having it because its an interesting fish and only have to feed it a few times a week and i like the look of it in my 300 gal aquarium. it is about 16inches long and will max out at 22-24 inches. i dont think there are any freshwater sharks. they are most likely catfish.
 
OP, maybe you should open up a public aquarium. Then you will make money off of you having sharks! Plus then you would be able to have the 20,000+ system you need. Heck, is there a larger mall in your area like the Mall of America that is up here. In fact I just went there the other day. They had three to four 4ft plus ray sharks, and maybe 5 black tips that were around 3 feet long. Plus the common sand tigers, but they don't swim as activly in my experiences. Also you could add those really big groupers! They had two or three 6 foot groupers they looked pretty scary even though they were maybe 10 feet away. OP you could check out the aquarium I went to if you ever get to the Phoenix, AZ area. Its called Sea Life Aquarium. I actually know the manager of the one up here :)

Whoa whoa WHOA I never said I wanted to have sharks. I'm new to the whole fish thing and was curious. I believe I was also going to start a thread about octopus to but that doesn't mean I will get one. Id rather get the facts from people who own these animals, than from a page wrote by someone who has read about them.

No not true, bull sharks are known to thrive in fresh water in fact. And are moving more up river through the lakes on the east coast.

Best of luck to your daughter, I'm just as fascinated and obsessed with sharks.
For SW you could also get a black banded shark or a epulette shark which is the shark I am going to get for the 350g tank. I know someone who has two nurse sharks in a 1000g tank in his house. My own personal reason for having such a magnificent animal is not to say 'I have one' but for my own personal enjoyment to see it every time I take a look at the tank. But personally when it does come to nurse sharks or black tips, anything that will get 12 ft or over, I don't think belongs in any tank. Bottom dwellers or not.

I also just got this to add to my collection of loving sharks:

All shark teeth. The two biggest, (top right hand corner and bottom left hand corner) are megalodon shark teeth, an extinct species that lived several million years ago, the one in the center of the two is a great white (my personal favorite shark) there are two bull shark teeth, mako shark, sand shark, and another extinct species I can't remember, but there are a few others. Something like this would be an awesome gift to your daughter.

Also you could add those really big groupers!

I also have a 2 ft grouper, he's awesome, not scary, he actually loves to kinda play fetch and splash around.

OMG my daughter would love that! Do you mind me asking where you bought it? I tried to buy her a shark tooth necklace but she insisted it was fake because "mom sharks have teeth bigger than my head!" Her favorite is the great white also! She has an old OLD movie (VHS) from national geographic that was bought from pawn shop, and it only shows great whites, she watches it before bed! "Mommy mommy mommy, watch how his teeth come down before his lips! Chomp! (giggle) don't ever try to kiss him! (giggle)" I want to find her books on sharks and shark anatomy, but things cost so much now days!

That's great that she's that way, I am too believe me, my obsessions are sharks and Marilyn Monroe... does she also go crazy when Shark Week happens?

Where I bought the teeth, its this store called Evolution in Manhattan,
http://theevolutionstore.com my favorite place on the planet. I actually asked them if they could frame shark teeth for me since they do mostly insects and things like that. I got to pick out my own teeth from a wide selection, picked my own frame, and placed the teeth exactly where I wanted them, within about a week I could pick it up. I believe they can do orders online or calling them, since I saw you live in Cali. They're great there too, they wouldn't give you a problem. They also have in cased in glass this great white shark tooth that is one of the largest ever recorded, but it's like 2 grand.. it's a dream of mine to own it. They're very famous in fact they do work for The Museum of Natural History. I actually am dying to get a sabor tooth tiger skull from them, just gotta save the money for it.

You are cracking me up. Obviously there are no Great Whites living in ponds across the world. They are called sharks. They live in FW. That comes out to be, a Freshwater shark.

...And your telling me my Cowfish isn't really a Cow? :rolleyes: You thinking your smarter is funny. :frog:

You know, my elders tell stories of a huge man eating serpent on our river. We call him Kaymoss. Another tribe next to us closer to the ocean (our river flows into their river,, which flows into the ocean) their elders talk about sharks, man eating sharks in the river. Maybe just a lost shark, but cool stories regardless.
